Forearm stop.

I'm adding a forearm stop to an existing front rest. Is there a general amount of distance that the forearm extend beyond the rest? I can slot the horizontal arm to make it adjustable if necessary if it does vary. Thanks, Hog

I like to have as little of the forend forward of the bags as possible, so for me 2" or so from the centre of the front bag is about max. Ideally I like the rifle to sit on the bags with only an inch or so forward of the front or rear bags as I believe this is best for balance. But you will need to test shoot grops and see what you rifle stock/bag combo tells you it likes. I have seen benchrest rifles shoot very well with more of the front or rear of the stocks than I would like over the bags. As others have said, adjustability in the forend stop bracket is a good thing.

What sort of rifle and stock?

6BR with a flat benchrest style stock. Don't know the manufacturer, it appears to be fiberglass or some type of composite. Might be a McMillan but don't know for sure. I bought the gun, used, on GB.

Before I built a stop, I would do a thorough test to determine where the rifle "likes" to be rested. Let the rifle tell you what it likes. For me, that works much better than trying to tell it what it should like, or assuming that I know. Where does the rifle balance? I have friends that found that they needed to add weight to the butts of their McMillan benchrest stocks to get them to shoot their best. Unless you are holding the rifle ( in which case it doesn't matter much) nose heavy isn't good.

Best groups were with "about" an 1 1/2 inches overhang. I'm trying to get as consistent a position as possible.
