Forearm or forend?

I've heard the term "forearm" used in gun talk all my life, and it has never made sense to me.
If a gun has a forearm, then where is the aft arm?
I can understand forend, because thats the forward end of the gun.
A forearm is part of the human body and guns have forends, or thats the way I see it.
Comments please?
