For whitetail deer out of a 284 Win

What is your favorite bullet? If you were going to use a ballistic tip would it be a 140gr or a 150gr?
Just curious.......Thanks

I’ve shot a fair amount of them with 139 & 140 gr ballistic tips and have lost a good amount of meat doing so. I switched to accubonds and had much better results and the extra penetration is worth it. They also hold together if you have to shoot one inside 100 yards. Either the 140 or 150 gr will work just fine so I would go with whatever shoots better.

Answering the first question, it's a 150 or 160 partition for deer out to about 400+/- yards. Beyond that it's always the 162 Amax for deer. The 160 NP is a bit heavy but still works well on deer. Have zero experience with the BTs for the 284s.

All I ever use on deer here in NYS is the 140 Ballistic tips out of my 284 XP-100..
Never ever lost a deer and don't usually loose much meat with a double lung shot, or the occasional head shot when the time is right...

I run the 180 VLD hunter out of mine with H4350. Have not got to kill with it, as I tagged out during bow season last year. But it is very accurate, just hoping to see something to pop in the future with that bullet.

I don't have a 284 Win, but for many years, I used the 160 NP and even larger bullets with my 7mmRM. That was when I carried that for all my whitetail hunting. I never shot a sub-MOA group with that rifle until just recently with the 140 Nosler BT Hunting. I now have a hunting spot where I might be shooting out to 400 yds and the inconsistency in the tips of the NPs has me focusing on other bullets. I haven't killed with any of these, but aside from the ballistic tips, I'm looking at the 150 Accubond LR, the 162 ELD-X, and the 145 gr Barnes LRX. The 162 Amax seems to have disappeared from the shelves. The 139 SST should also do well but I wouldn't want to go any lower.

The 162 ELD-X seems to be the largest recommended for the 1:9.5 twist rate barrel, so consider the twist rate when choosing the range of bullets that you want to look at. Some of the .284s are particularly sensitive to twist rate, especially at magnum velocities. Go with the low end of the range to get the velocity up and/or the recoil down.

I reload for a friend and his Kimber 280AI. He’s had a lot of success with 150 ballistic tips. I tried to get him to try some Bergers but he won’t, he has taken several big game animals with the combo and won’t give it up.

120-140 or 150 Bts work and shoot well in most 7 mm rifles. Which one to shoot should be matched to size and range of game used on. I use 120-140 gr. on 100-200yd. shots and 150gr. on 200 plus . Todays BT are not as explosive as years past. They will bring the bacon home if shooter does his part.

Not a 284, but my old 280 Rem (very close ballistically) favored the 139SST and the 154SST. Very similar to the Nosler BT, but the SST has an interlock feature to secure the core and the interior of the jacket is scored for more consistent expansion. If I had to pick one, it'd be the 154gr version. It's a pretty sturdy bullet and leaves nice, quarter to golfball size exits on ribcage shots.

I've used a 154 interbond on a few elk out Of a 7stw with great results. I would think theyd work and they won't break the bank either...
