For those of you using SS media

Anyone have problems dinging up the case mouths using stainless steel media? Is it a valid concern or is it easily cleaned up running them thru a giruard.

Dennis I don't have stainless tumbler looking to get one just heard a few issues with this.
I am looking for a way to get brass cleaner before I anneal.

The lips get peened, no biggie the Giraud takes care of it, and for the record a Rockwell hardness tester says that SS media does not harden the brass

It's a great cleaner, if you do leave the brass tumbling too long, it will round the mouths! I let mine stay in for 4 hours, got tied up one day, and it did round them.

Just pulled my three way trimmer out and got things straight.

Usually 20 minutes in the SS cleaner does the job, I do use my ultrasonic cleaner more than anything, but sometimes the carbon builds on the inside around the flash hole, the SS cleaner does a better job on issues like this! You need a good ultrasonic cleaner, mine came from sharper tech, has four transducers!

Always seems on some brass I still use a RCBS primer pocket brush just to touch up things! Just every now and then!

Wow! 20 minutes does the job? I have seen and read it takes 4 hours which I thought was a long time. 20 minutes I could really live with. I hope others chime in and give results on how long it took to clean their brass. Dennis, are you doing any pre-cleaning to shorten the SS cleaning to only 20 minutes?

How does the media separate from the brass once done? Do any of you have a hard time getting the media out of the inside if the cases,

Thanks,
JS

I resize using Ballistol for a lube (water soluble) then tumble for 20 minutes and they really shine. Ballistol acts as a pre-cleaner but is not needed and I used to use Imperial lube and it's a lot greasier and needs a little longer tumbling time.

Spraying a little Ballistol in a baggie with your brass after shooting also helps to clean the brass regardless of cleaning method and just a little Ballistol on a rag will quickly shine up a case chucked up in a drill/caseholder if you don't have many to do.

To get the pins out of the case the trick is to grab 3 or 4 at a time in one hand and invert them in the tumbler 3/4 full of clean water and give a quick wrist shake and the water helps the pins slide out back into your tumbler. I do 50 cases at a time to keep my lots separate and it goes very quick just sounds harder than it is to describe.

I retired my Ultrasonic cleaner. I do everything with the Stainless media. Get a Lee universal decaping die, pop primers out and then throw brass in Stainless media for about 30 minutes, it will come out better than new with primer pockets clean and all. No damage to case mouths.

Interesting. I have a set up coming, and I've too read a lot of 4 hour times. I guess, like anything else you have to learn what works for you as you go.

Try using more pins or putting in less brass. Those small SS pins are too small and too light to really do any damage to your brass. I'm guessing your brass is damaging other brass cases.

Try using a plastic small hole(approx 1/4") colander over a 2 gallon bucket for separating the pins from the brass. Put the colander over/into the bucket and and put it in your kitchen sink. Dump out as much dirty water as you can from the tumbler and rinse it a few times while still in the tumbler drum. When the water is semi clean dump the pins and brass into the colander. Run a little water into the colander as you move around the brass with both hands. Dump out the water from the 2 gallon bucket as needed. After a few minutes of mixing the brass around in the running water there will be no pins left in your brass. I used to pick them up two or three at a time like someone suggested, but my way is much quicker and it helps to make sure the brass is thoroughly rinsed.

I use enough hot water to completely cover the brass and pins and then I add 1 teaspoon of Pomolive and 1 teaspoon of Lemishine. My tumbler drum is never more than a 1/3-1/2(max) full. I use a Lortone QT12 rock tumbler and I run it for 2-3 hours.

I use a Dillon media separator and a 10 yr old son who turns the handle for about a minute and all media is then separated and lying in the bottom of the catch bin. Works very well. I will get two pcs of media stuck in a flash hole every now and then, but I catch those during the other processes so its not a big deal.

A colander for bulk separation and then a rare earth magnet works great for capturing stray pieces amongst the brass.

OH man! I got my set up and ran my first batch last night. Just 2-1/2 hours for the first run to see how it'd work.

Amazing looking brass, with pockets almost all clean. A few had a little residue still in them, but I was pleased.

It's also available at http://www.pelletsllc.com/ Their Customer Svc people know the proper size and depending on the quantity it sells for $3-$5/lb rather than the $50 for a 5# bag. Add the cost of a flat rate "small" USPS box and you'll still spend about half as much at this site.
