For those bear hunters, I have a question.

Last spring my son was bored and wanted to go hunting(go figure). He ask to go coyote hunting and I finally answered yes knowing that I have tried and tried to call a yote in with no luck. So I took him out, gave him the the call and the little motorized tail thingy and said have at it. He placed the call and the the tail thingy and I settle in for a nap. Within 30 min he was poking me saying, daddy, daddy a bear. I jump up thinking ok it's on! There at the tree line about 200 yards was a bear, just standing there. We where in cover and I dont think it saw us. It was looking our way, and I think it saw the tail thingy and started at it, which was about 100 yards directly in front of us. I got on the rifle thinking it's coming at us. It stopped when I started moving, and finally went away.

Question is, will a bear come to a varmint call? Or was it just there and came out? We seem to have alot of bear in our area, and alot where we are hunting. bear season is coming next week. Looking to try and hunt some. Is it worth our time to use a call?

I think they will come to just about anything that indicates a meal. I've seen them come from hundreds of yards away to investigate a group of squawking magpies, because that indicates a dead animal (or at least a gut-pile) is there.

Yes. Varmint calls are used to call black and even the brown/grizzly in Alaska. But from what I understand you need to use the call more often too keep them interested and coming in.

Last spring while turkey hunting,I sat against a large oak tree and made maybe 3 clucks on the box call, heard some brush cracking maybe 100 yards away?then silence for minute maybe, heard a small twig snap behind me, I peeked over my left shoulder and there was a bear:eek: maybe 8ft from me, not a monster but still a 100 pounder and waaay to close. This year when hunting the same tree, I hung a well worn shirt behind me:D...

Varmint, turkey calls are known to draw in other predators.
Past 2 years i've used a fawn bleat, and an elk cow call effectively.

Blowing a varmint call in bear country just to see what will happen is not smart. I have called in two bears, several elk, so many deer I could not count, all to a Weem's Wild call, Duo Tone and Lohman MVP-3 call.

You never know what is going to come in when you start blowing on a varmint call.

Cheek, if the bear had killed your son, the state would have arrested for you for child endangerment.

Set the MVP-4 on long range, cup your hand over the end, opening and closing your hand, blow and control your breath and make it sound like an animal has it's balls caught in an electric fence, or is in the mouth of a predator being shaken and chewed to death

Be ready. I have handed these two calls to novices that had never seen a call, must less blown one. They called in their first coyotes, bob cats, and foxes.

Most definitely. Several years ago I was hunting predators in the State Forest north of Hamburg, PA using a Primo's Electronic Caller set on a fawn distress call. A rather large black bear came in and scared the s*** out of me. Once he winded me he took off in another direction.

Since then I've confined my predator hunting to some farms far south of there.

Had a Foxpro out and was laying down prone behind a log in a treeline about 40 yards out. Had a mountain lion run up at me in the cutline from 90 degrees right.. Laying prone with a fixed 10x and scoped in down range.
Thank you useless federal government for prohibiting the carrying of a sidearm for hunters here, while going overboard on safety for everyone and everything else.
