Food plots

Just wondering what you fellows do and what works in your area. I only own 15 acres so I have to draw in deer. I hinge trees in thickets for bedding areas and plant around two to three acres of deer yum. Landino, red clover over sowed with wheat or oats. I have an established mineral lick that's now 2 feet deep. I'm in the south so just wondering what works elsewhere.

I'm down to ten acres of personal property. No hinge cutting for me, I rely on my neighboring property for bedding and mine as a transitional area into bigger agricultural fields in the evening. I do maintain a few smaller plots, both about a quarter acre each. One is solid clover, the other is a mix of forage oats, winter wheat, and peas. Neither is large enough to sustain a large herd, but both have proven to stop deer for long enough while traveling to get shots with a bow.

Most around here use some form of alfalfa, some mix of chickory, and sweet turnips. of course standing corn works well because we get a bit o' snow here.

Heading to my place in Georgia later this week to do food plots. I will plant Whitetail Institute Winter Greens, in with the local oats and brown-top millet I use. First must cut the brush, plow, lime, disc and then seed. It take a while but I have a large 36hp diesel tractor there.

My past experience with perennials like clover have never been successful because they have to be weeded throughout the year and I do not live there. No Plow and other magic seeds suck. I can repeat that but you should get the idea.

Oats with some winter greens (brassicas) work.

I plant a lot of WinterPZ in the fall, and every few years plant Diakon Radishes for fall plots.....

Just got started on my 600 acres of food plots! More of a bovine type at my house. Do have one 7 acre plot and all wheat, rye, turnips for me

Several things work well and I think you have a good start with what you're planting. I generally will layer my small bow plots with oats, wheat , brassica mix, & radishes. If the weather is iffy, one or more of them will grow. I planted mine 8 days ago right before a rain & it's up 4-6" as of yesterday (oats & wheat)
QDM has a brassica mix that they promote & sell that works very well, a good mix of brassica that are very hardy and will take sustained browsing. A 6# bag normally costs about $30 and will plant 1.5 acres at the correct ratio. They say 6# per acre but that is TOOO much 3-4 # an acre is perfect.

Alfalfa, if you mow or sell it for hay about every 30 days beginning June 1 is great. Pear, apple, paw paw, and persimmons trees are great too. JME. WD

They don't hit alfalfa good here oddly enough. There are so many soybean fields around me, I don't bother to plant those. Try to give them something different. I have a few alfalfa fields around me I have watched this summer, no deer, but the ghogs love it. Working on permission to shoot those fields next summer.

I was walking in a pine tree patch and came upon a pile of apples. Hmmm...methinks someone was baiting with pineapples...

The deer on my farm seem to like a lot of different stuff. Unfortunately, the tomatoes and peppers in my raised bed garden seem to be the favorites right now. I tried planting a food plot of milo or hay grazer for the quail and pheasants for several years running, but the deer browsed the grain before the birds had a chance. Mung beans also seem to be a big attractant. Vic

I live in the northwest with blacktail deer and have 300 acres! be careful what you put down!! everything you see on tv is for whitetail deer. I have used C'Mere deer products and put around my large garden and around wifes roses. this stuff works great haven't had a deer on my place in over a year! if you want to get rid of deer just put C'Mere deer out and they will be gone. put some out around tree stand with trail camera and haven't see a deer in a year. this stuff will really get rid of deer!

Food plot? FOOD PLOT?? Just looked out my front door. The midnight gardening crew (3 does and 4 fawns) did their work early this morning, as usual. About 1:30 or so.
If it's green, it's GONE!! The three apple trees and two pear trees close to the house just arn't enough.
The crew comes around the corner and does the number on the wife's flowers. If they don't eat them, they pull them out of the ground and leave them laying next to the barrels where they "were" planted.
Worst part??? They've got a Fox as a lookout. Fox shows up, checks everything out and within a few minutes the gardeners show up to do their thing. That's not mentioning the BIG Elk Cows that clean all the leaves and apples off the lower branches of the apple tree out front.
I'll say one thing, I don't have to worry about picking up any fallen fruit.;)
