FN Belgium Mauser action

How good is FN Belgium Mauser benchrest action? Do they need to be trued up to compete with Remington actions? Do gunsmiths charge more to work on them compared to a Remington? Thanks for you help.

They are old. It was a Mauser 98 that didn’t have a magazine cutout turning it into a single shot. They may or may not need “truing” as Mausers were usually case hardened and that process tends to not induce stresses that lead to warping. However, the manufacturing techniques used were, let’s just say very old school. When it was right it worked well, and then it didn’t. The operators of the machinery might not have the experience to know when it was no longer right. So not every action was “good”. Leave it for a collector.

Mausers have, SLOW,.. "Lock Time" like, the Winchester Model 70's !
The Rem 700 and Clones,.. ARE,. Superior for, accuracy !
Nice to "look at", tho ! They're OK for, Hunting Rifles, too ! ( I've barreled & stocked, a bunch, in the 1980's ! )
Getting 1 MOA was, NO problem,.. getting 1/2 MOA or less ???
Tikka's and Rem 700 Actions, for best, "ave guy",.. Target work.

Actually much slower lock time than Win. M70's, but not a big deal off the bench. Single shot FN Mausers are from the 70's and were made of chrome vanadium steel, not case hardened like the older military versions. Some were/are capable of good accuracy. 1st BR rifle I owned was a .222 Mag. on one of these actions and groups were in the 1/4-3/8 range -- not bad for early 70's. I have owned a number of these (still have several) and never owned one that would not shoot 1/2 MOA or less with a good barrel and some prep -- lap lugs, true rec. front to threads, true bolt face if necessary. Remember when they were made and realize a little truing helped most actions from that era. Never was happy about having to force the large extractor over the rim and stress free bedding is critical since it has a long springy tang. Sure isn't in the class with later specialized BR actions, but not bad for a varmint rig or informal BR shooting. One of my future projects is building a prone sling rifle on one of these for an occasional LR match.

Lock time is slow. If you plan to hunt with it. It will work fine. Not a BR action for sure. Just my two cents Tommy Mc
