Learned something new today, probably old news to everone else. This is not a product bash by any means, just a DIY fix to keep going.
Using my 3 day old .223 Hornady New Dimension FL sizing die w/ Zip spindle depriming LC crimped so I can ream the pockets. About 800 rds in and SNAP, there goes the pin, expander ball and end of the zip spindle. Hornady does include extra pins and an extra zip spindle, but not an expander - nor can they be ordered from the parts list.
Good news, the expander threads are the same on Hornady, Redding and RCBS spindles (decapping rods). Decapping pins are not, however, and may require a slight modification or a spacer to take up slack. Works like a charm.
Here is another option should your Hornady zip spindle fail: Take apart some other RCBS and Redding .22 cal dies to see if the spindle rods are close the same diameter. A little bit of aluminum foil wrapped around the decapping rod threads and the lock nut threads on firmly and works well after tightening down.
This worked for .22 caliber, not sure if other sizes are compatible or not. Just wanted to share the new found knowledge.
