Fixed a hideous pull type bolt stop on 40x

I picked up a 40x a couple weeks ago for a retro varmint rig. I knew it had a pull type bolt stop, but didn't realize a 3/8" sized hole was tapped to attach it! Its a huge, very necessary hole and needed a way to cover it up to make it much eye pleasing! Most releases made such as the PTG, Anschultz, etc are not wide enough to cover up the huge hole. So I decided to make one that fit. Ended up making a prototype out of aluminum and then one out of steel. The end result came out looking very clean and highly functional. Bolt slides in smooth and release is bind free. The spring I used is from a ball point pen, lol.

Why in the world would anyone use a pull type release? IMO, they are hideous looking, LOL.

Yep, very ugly. Reason? They were easy to install and on the market before the style you used were generally available. Nice job of covering it up.

Very nice job, did you make the screw as well? Can you share the details on this aspect I really like the blind hole. One quick comment and Im probably pointing out the obvious but I thought it would be worth mentioning. When selecting a material for the bolt stop choose a material that is softer than the bolt so that no lug damage will occur if the bolt is cycled in an aggressive fashion.

Yes, made the screw to fit the blind hole. It started off as a black oxide 4-40 cap head screw. Simply cut the threads down to make a pin section and let a small portion of threads hear the head of the screw. I threaded the bottom portion of the slot...the side where the head is. I started off with a drill size that fit the pin portion and drilled the blind hole then used the tap size drill to only drill the bottom half of the slot. I then tapped a piece of 1/4" aluminum round stock and screwed my machined pin into it. Chucked that up in the lathe and turned the diameter of the cap head down for a better fit in the spot face. Works pretty well. I do need to spot face a portion of the stock since the head of the pin screw protrudes past the OD of the action. Not a biggie since I have to re-bed and open up the barrel channel to accept a 1.250" barrel.

As for the material...I was going to go with aluminum for the final fit, but decided on mild steel. A bit more durable than aluminum, but softer than the bolt. I don't plan on running anything fast and hard out of it anyhow. Probably would have used some 304 if I had some on hand...

Thanks for the kind words...

Nice work Chuck. If you got bored you could produce and sell those as a kit!! In your free time of course. ;)

Thanks again for the advise and help with my lathe setup and threading issues.

What would get to do a job like that on someone else's rifle without the big ugly hole?

There's one word to call the plunger type bolt stops...FUGLY!
Second issue is they are installed in one of the existing receiver sight base screw holes.

The oversized Anschutz style bolt stop looks good.

No can do. Don't have an FFL. PTG makes a very nice bolt release that requires a much smaller slot. It can be installed the same way with a blind hole and threaded pin.

Thanks Dan!
