Fitting butt plate to McMillan stock

What do you guys use to shorten the length of pull and square up the butt on a McMillan stock. I was thinking about using my miter saw but kinda worried about chipping the gel coat. When I rigged my fiberglass boat I turned the drills and countersinks counterclockwise as to not chip it. Would changing the blade direction on the miter saw lessen the chance of chipping? Thanks...Ron

I would love to answer your question about changing blade direction, but can't. What I can tell you is that McMillan Customer Service is awesome. I spoke to them twice in the last week about fixing some chips on my stock. They told me what they use and how to go about fixing it myself (they offered to repair it for free). They even told me what brand of paint they use to paint there stocks....etc.. Give them a call, I am sure they could help you. Either way, good luck with your project! Jonathan

I have cut several fiberglass stocks that that had gelcoat. We shortened the buttstock and installed three way adjustable buttplates.

Used a 16" dia carbide tipped table saw, masked the cut line with 3M masking tape. Make sure you have the butt and blade square to vertical.

Stocks cut with no chipping.

I have a 12" fine carbide tipped blade on the mitter saw now so maybe I'll take a trimming cut right on the end to see what it cuts like. I've always masked the cut area on walnut and laminates with no problems and as long as the stock is clamped down one would think it will be fine. Thanks
