first triple on coyotes

The adult female breezed by the FoxPro without stopping, and since I don't carry a shotgun, she escaped unscathed. A minute later I picked up some movement in the junipers about 225 yards downhill. I thought it might be the same female rethinking the free jackrabbit dinner.

The coyote was looking up towards the caller, almost straight back at me. The BogPod provided a good rest for the downhill shot. I held between the coyote's shoulder blades. The shot hit a little in front of the point of aim, striking the coyote right in the brain.

Another coyote appeared immediately, looking at the dead coyote's twirling tail. It presented a nice broadside shot. The 40gr Ballistic Tip broke the shoulder blade and didn't exit. The second coyote piled up in about 10 yards.

Amazingly, a third coyote walked into the opening and sniffed the body of the first coyote. The third coyote was quartering towards me. It dropped instantly at the shot, chest cavity liquefied and spine broken.

All three coyotes were this year's pups -- about 15-20 pounds each.

I was shooting my trusty Rem 700 in .222, 24gr of H322, 40gr Ballistic Tips .010" off the lands, W-W brass, Rem 7-1/2 primers.

Good shooting! I have not ever tripled when multiples have come in they scattered like crazy at the first shot or on occasion i have got buck fever and messed it up.Sure is fun no matter.

Congratulations. My nerves would get the best of me well before I could make a triple! Great job.

Great shooting, that doesn't happen every day, and even rarer with adult dogs.

Some momma yote is whining about raising those stupid little dogs. All that work for 5 minutes of a hunters time.

Keep up the good work the deer and turkeys appreciate it.

It is common internet "knowledge" that you can't kill a coyote at that distance with a lowly 222 and a too small 40 gr bullet.

Great shooting - what you used is one of my favorite combos of chambering and bullets, I can't even begin to count how many I have killed with that combo.

Nice job! I've killed many doubles but never a triple. Had my chance at a triple one time and wouldn't you know it, missed the last dog twice! Oh well, maybe I'll get another chance someday.

Young and dumb? Makes no matter. A win is a win and 1+1+1=THREE any ol' day of the week. You're going to have to go some to beat that one.......but it'll be fun trying.

Nice shot placement with great results.

Yea, was thinking the same thing, 'you can't kill a coyote with a stinkin 222', NO WAY. After 3-4K rds of Fireball in a rifle it isn't quite as easy to say the .222 is my favorite rd but is in the top 3 with the Fireball and magnum version. A state trapper that held the position for 30+ yrs and now retired shot exclusively a Pre Garcia 222HB with H335 and Hor 52BTHP. I know I am safe in saying that his luck with that combo is/was in the thousands. Sure he missed a few and lost a few but percentage wise his kill ratio far exceeded those. Dead is dead, experience over luck makes success!!!!

Just to show it wasn't a fluke, here's this morning's take -- an adult pair. The male came in on a jackrabbit distress call, but hung up 200 yards out. He moved when I shot, and I hit him a little farther back than I wanted. He ran flat out about 100 yards before going end over end when he ran out of blood pressure. The Fox Bang went to pup distress and the female came bounding in, taken at about 75 yards, dropped in her tracks. 8)

Toby,

Was all this in central "Worshington" somewhere's?

What velocity are you getting from that load? Barrel length? (I also burn H322 in my Deuce behind 40-gr BT.)

The 5 coyotes in the photos were shot in NV and WY, but I have shot coyotes (1 at a time) in central WA on WDFW land. Heck, I have coyotes in my neighborhood in the Seattle suburbs, but I imagine the neighbors would get bent out of shape if I touched off my .222 in town. ;)

I chronographed this load when I put together a few thousand of them for ground squirrel shooting 20 years ago. They leave the 24" barrel at a shade over 3500fps. Best of all, even after 20 years they still go "bang!", and generally hit where I'm pointing. :D
