First time using K&M neck turner

Hey everyone,

I received my K&M neck turning tool which came w/ the .30cal carbide cutter. It did not come w/ a mandrel that does not have a cutter. Am I correct in assuming I can use the carbide cutter while turning the necks to remove the doughnut and turn necks in one step? If so, at what point do I square the heads?

I'm following the Case Prep archived article on this site and the author has it broken into two steps, where you use a regular mandrel to turn necks, but then the carbide mandrel when squaring the cases.

Can someone please walk me through this process or point to a tutorial.

Thanks

Not sure of what you mean when your talking of squaring the heads with a carbide cutter. That cutter has nothing to do with squaring anything, it just cuts the necks and the mandrel has it's own cutters for the doughnut if you have one like that.
You should also have a expanding mandrel to open the necks up before turning them.
They don't come as a kit, you have to order the expander, and a holder if you don't already have one..

I wonder why you would need to trim cases to length before neck turning them ?
What would be the benefit... nothing wrong with doing it but it seems like the formed case would give you a better consistency.
I never do anything to a case until it's been fired one time, unless it needs to be turned before it will go in the chamber.
Squaring the heads I assumed was working on the head of the case not the neck....

I do not trim to length or turn the necks until AFTER the first firing. My experience is that the case will fire form to my chamber with the first firing and actually shorten a bit. Then I will trim to a uniform length and turn the necks.

Just my observations.

The K&M turner sets the length of the cut,how far down the neck or how deep into the shoulder) by indexing on the case mouth. If you necks are not all the same they will not all cut to the same depth at the N/S junction. WHen I get get a new set of cases I FL size them to make sure the case head to N/S junction is all the same. Then I measure them for length and trim them to match the shortest. Then I know there all the same then I will expand and turn.
