First Time Moly Resin

This is the SOCOM Flat Black color.

Talk about fast delivery, this was this delivered on like the third day after I ordered it.

This picture is actually the second application of it. The first time around, it was very flat, no sheen at all, but it felt like sandpaper. I didn't like that so I blasted it off and recoated, this time going against the instructions and spraying it wet. It doesn't have the sandpaper feel but it is glossier. Oh well, Im sure it's my application and not the product. Learning curve and all that.

And, there's a booger front and center, above and to the right of the caliber designation. 20220422_175315.jpg

Personally, I prefer anodizing for my in-the-white receivers.

Interesting. I am needing to coat some stainless parts and was looking to get myself setup for something. I'll look into this!

Oh yeah! That's always good. I have done plenty of anodizing including lower receivers. I put my container of sulfuric acid in a big tub of ice to keep it cool during the process. Then soak in warm due solution then boil to seal very durable finish. I have a couple of SS barrels I want to coat with something and decided to try the Moly Resin. I tried it on this lower to see how it's going to hold up there.

I read all the instructions and watched some utoob vids. Instructions say use an air brush. In the videos, not posted by the maker of the Moly Resin but just by people using it, I saw many using the cheap plastic Harbor Freight air brush.

I used to have a really good airbrush years ago but I loaned it out to a “friend” and it was destroyed. So I went and got one of those el cheapo ones. It actually did a pretty good job.

Cleaning it though, it's instructions said use water or paint thinner. Paint thinner wouldn't cut the Moly Resin. I used lacquer thinner. It did not hurt the body of the tool but the air cap o-ring grew enormously in size and the plastic paint jar was attacked as well. It came with six jars, so I put it together without the o-ring and it worked fine. But eventually I'll run out of jars. Now, it only cost 11 or 12 bucks so it could be considered a throw-away but I don't like to work that way.

The Moly Resin instructions say use acetone or MEK. I didn't try acetone because I figured it would kill the thing being plastic and all. Didn't have MEK to try. My advice would be spend a couple bucks more and get one with a metal body and a glass jar.
