First time HBN

Got an HBN kit and went through the process. Do these look correct? Or should I wipe them or run them longer. 2 1/2 hours in tumbler
Thanks,
Regis

i love hBN but to tell if the bullet coating is right or wrong is the hard part. a must in preparation is to soak bullets in hot water with a dash of blue dawn detergent. air dry or heat oven to lowest setting then turn off then put degreased bullets in jelly roll pan into oven. can crack the door open for air circulation. if the bullets still have machine oil on them, the hBN will not penetrate or will not appear to have been treated even if they are. anymore, i dont wipe them off. could run in corn cob media for 30 seconds. if in doubt, wipe off one bullet and check. can always degrease again and redo. make sure to swap bore with an hBN/alcohol solution and let dry before firing

I appreciate you sharing your process. I cleaned them in acetone and dried on a towel and waited a day before coating/tumbling.
Do yours look like a clear coat or do you see any white residue?
Thank you,
Regis

Looks like you used way too much HBn, 100 bullets takes just a pinch. May want to clean off shot and start over, with just a 1/8 of a tsp.

Are you using a tumbler, or a vibrating unit? hBN is applied via impact plating. A tumbler allows the shot to impact the bullets and force the hBN onto the jacket. A vibrating unit does not allow that to happen. The tip of a medium size flat screwdriver covered with a little mound of hBN is plenty. I have always used the little plastic ice-cream sample sticks from Baskin Robbins. They hold the perfect amount of hBN.

I'm using a vibrator (Lyman 600) but, I do have a tumbler. I will put in tumbler for a few hours and see.
Thank you,
Regis

For the life of me I can not find the article. But It said to use a jiffy peanut butter plastic jar in a thumblers tumbler with BBs. The jar fits perfect and was easy to use. I had great success with it. I think it even gave how much HBN per Bullets used.

Vibratory tumbler works just fine, no media if you use enough bullets. Heat lamp helps if its cold, it doesn't take hours.

Cleaned bagged bullets precleaning isn't necessary.

Must admit I couldn't get HBN right. Tumble in the windscreen wiper motor driven machine I made for moly, in bottles in the Thumblr, both with & without ball bearings, in the Lyman small bowl vibrator with ceramic media & ball bearings again, then I gave it up when I worked out that the 208+ grain bullets I used at 1200 yards didn't like it & more to the point, that velocities were exactly the same as bare, so the only good I was getting was easy cleaning & heartache (here he takes a big gasp).

Yep.

Well, I did a couple things.
(1) I rolled them around in a towel (bowling ball style).
(2) Started new batch (100 bullets) in rotary tumbler. Looked exactly like in vibrator.
I rolled these in towel just like the 1st batch and they look the same.
Here is finished bullets that I'll load. Very slippery.
Thanks for all the tips

Looks good.

I have used a rotary and vibratory tumbler and they both had the same results. With the vibratory I remove all of the cleaning media and run the pill bottles that have stainless media, hBN and bullets in the bowl with nothing else. There seems to be a bit more action with no media in the bowl.

Has hbn coating proven to be as critical as you guys make it out to be?

Not trying to be a jerk here, but I have played with it quite a bit and found that lots of bullets in a vibe tumbler for 10 minutes or so with a bowling ball towel finish works great.

I think you answered your own question. If it works then just go with it. I run vibratory quite a bit longer than most just to be safe buts that's just me.
