First run with my new AMP

Tesoro

All I can say is Wow!

I have either hand annealed or used an auto feed gas machine for decades. I seat using an arbor press and am used to feeling the slight variances in seating force and separate loose and hard ones from the batch to use as foulers or plinkers.

Yesterday I loaded my first try of 80 5x 6XC AMP annealed cases and only felt two which were a tad off from the rest, but not even enough to mark as foulers. The seating also felt more 'buttery' than seating into gas annealed cases. Crazy! Looking forward for the wx to clear so I can see the diff on paper or crono.

Bought a Mk1 when they first came out and then the Aztec update… Never been sorry and it is quick, precisely accurate and safe to use in the house.
Wish list would be a Mk2 but only for the ability to store settings… and the bench Bling.. ;)

My friend has let me use his AMP with Aztec mode. It is about as simple as it gets. I never annealed before, and this was very easy to set up and get started.

Since it is at someone else’s house, I decided to anneal once at the “5 times fired” point to reset the work hardening in the necks.

thanks Tesoro. it took a long time but i think ive finally talked myself into an Amp— this helps— hope ur trip is going well

I was very happy with my hand annealing method until I read that 2012 metallurgy study done in the UK done on an F-class shooter's gas hand annealed cases. It takes alot of work for me too convert 308 Lapua Palma srp into 6XC so I decided to cash in a gold bar and get the machine. No regrets!

They get weekly or bi-weekly shipments to the US. If you register and reserve one on the website then you will be notified when in stock and given a day to act. You will need to provide your own case shell holder for each pilot. I think the recommend a certain make. The units ship out of Vegas. FYI. This is the best gadget invented after the Garnin crono!

You might want to ca$h in another gold bar and get the AMP press....a game changer IMO if you sort your ammo by neck tension and the graph shows you how consistent your neck prep is.

Mark, are your cases marked and if so, do individual cases have consistent force curves each time you seat a bullet in one of them?

Dave.
I do not mark my cases but I keep a batch of 200 for two day match, I sort them by "work done" on AMP press and put them in my ammo boxes in order from low to high so I'm firing sighters and score rounds with basically the same neck tension, the LO/HI outliers are used for foulers.

thanks for the additional info—-i didnt know thats how it worked. keep us informed how ur es and groups turn out if you could

Im sure youve tested how much accuracy is affected by neck tension variance. can you provide any info on that? thanks
I test neck tension during load development, I've never tested LO vs HI to see if there's difference on paper, what AMP press tells me how consistent my neck tension is and by sorting I'm not shooting extreme ends of match rounds on score target.

I have been interested in this but I always get hung up on my bullet sorting. What kind of bullet sorting do you do if any and how do you pair it with the neck tension readings?
I shoot custom KHP 6mm bullets, sort them by OAL .002" variance then trim and point for 600 and 1K competition, all neck tension testing is done after powder charge and seating depth tests.

Interesting. I definitely know what you mean by that buttery feeling when the neck are right.

My buddy has one of the AMP units and he offered to let me come use it, but he's far away. I've quit annealing completely at this point and use a work around to improve neck consistency.

I reduced the mandrel in my Lee Collet Neck Sizer where the collets squeeze my .001 or so. I can feel the neck drag a little bit when I lower the ram. If I don't feel it drag, I hit the neck again until the drag is right. A cheesy work around, but MAN is the seating tension dramatically more consistent.

Those Lee collet dies are a really good die. There is a learning curve with them but once you get the hang of it you can do different things with it.
