The first observation I had was, 'this stock is made for iron sights, and not a scope! This is going to hurt! The kimbers I have first handled w/o scopes, were positioned like they were pointing towards the sky when shouldered. I guess that is why the recoil is more seemingly manageable. I thought, 'this critter is going to kick!' Mind you, have have been extremely pampered by using a Browning 270 win BAR w/BOSS & shot 110 vmaxes for a long time. Even my 243 kimber montana has a muzzle break on it.
This tikka does kick form the bench, but not as bad as a Browning x-bolt in 7 mag. I was really wanting an xbolt, but at almost twice the price, and medieval customer service I received from browning made it a no-go zone for me. ( 4 different rifles).
I shot from a rear bag and a harris bipod with a board 'C' clamped across the table top in order to 'load the bipod'. It has been working for me lately, rather than my old style, with was with a front rest. I might go back to the front rest, to see if there is any difference. I use to shoot coyotes by belly-flopping, but now I shoot sitting from a tripod. I OCW tested 3 loads with 4 shots each. H1000, RL22, and H4831 w/130 SST's. Im .01'' off the lands, which cycles through the magazine, a condition I was very worried about before I received it. Testing in the 90's temp, I was only able to shoot 2 rounds, I then put a squirrel cage fan in front of the barrel for a cool down. This took awhile! My GC just built a new building w/AC and WIFI, so life wasn't too rough!
The best group with the H4831 w/59.5 grouped was 4 shots 1 1/8'' high x 2 1/4'' wide. 3 shots grouping 1/4'' high x 2 1/4'' wide @ 200 yards. Velocity was from 2877 to 2928. Loads from 58.5, 59.0, 59.5, and 60.0
The best group with the RL22 grouped was 4 shots @ 1 7/16'' high x 1 1/2'' wide, center to center. 3 shots @ 3/8'' high x 3/4'' wide. Velocity was from 2961 to 3155. Loads from 56.5,57.0,57.5, and 58.0 All with fed 210's.
The H1000 loads need to be retested to be fair. Had a couple of screw ups. 40 rounds was enough for me in one day. I normally shoot 30 braked at the most when OCW testing.
Guess I will load some more and see what these loads do at 400. I just started to use the Giraud triway trimmer in my drill press. Wow! What a difference that tool makes!
I have a bolt on muzzle brake coming, along with a bolt on beavertail forend and a vertical screw in hand grip. The idea of a modular stock systems seems pretty cool for now. Will keep you updated on my progress. Cheers!
