First long-distance rifle

I appreciate everyone's advice.......within this past week I have ran into 3-4 guys in gun stores that have been really helpful to me.....two of them spent about 15 minutes talking about ballistics/reloading, etc. It's been amazing that people would take time to do that.

One of my dilemmas right now is how far do I want to initially jump into this? Do I get a used rifle with match-grade barrel, bedded/floated, trued/blueprinted.......or pick up something like an off-the-shelf Savage Creedmoor from the local gun store and start with that first.....

Well...if you're willing to spend around $5000.00 that will get you started on your journey....not counting reloading tools, components, etc.!

If you start reloading, a few guidelines that I can offer. You need a press, look at the rockchucker, simple strong and cheap if you find a used one. Rcbs 505 scale, funnel, reloading tray, and trimmer, and dies. Most of these things you can buy in the classified section without the manufacture markup cost 😉

Yes. Call Bob White http://theshooterscorner.com/ after browsing through his list of used rifles. If you buy a solid used rifle with a custom action and Jewell trigger, you can sell it at virtually no loss if you decide that it isn't for you. In the meantime you can learn what it really takes to shoot well, because the rifle itself won't be the limiting factor.

You won't have to spend more than $2000 for the rifle itself, maybe not even $1500.

You can go even cheaper with a blueprinted Rem 700 from Bob's inventory. They are cheaper for a reason.

or pick up something like an off-the-shelf Savage Creedmoor from the local gun store and start with that first.....

No.

There was a nice 6xc on the sale board😳 if Tubbs wins with it? scope = sightron(think big) -50 or nightforce 12-42..they never leave the nest, here, and are good for a lot. What😫 do they say about crying? Once.

I worked up a spreadsheet with about 15 calibers on it......it has grain, BC, muzzle velocity, 500 yd vel/energy/drop, 800 yd vel/energy/drop, 1000 yd vel/energy/drop, recoil, drift, and cost per round new/reloaded. I weighted each caliber by these values and tallied up the score:
#1 - 7mm Rem Mag
#2 - .338 Lapua Magnum
#3 - 7mm RSAUM
#4 - 6.5 Creedmoor

Another factor that I didn't mention before........I live in a VERY windy area......the city I live in (Abilene, TX) made the #7 slot in a windiest city list.

Anyway, I appreciate all the input.......I received some funds today so I am finally ready and able to buy something.......really psyched !!!!!

Go to a match before you buy something. Go to a match before you buy something. Go to a match before you buy something.

I have Googled F-Class matches but haven't found too many......supposedly there is a monthly one at CTSA in New Braunfels which is about 250 miles away.....may try that one in May.

I 2nd, 3rd and 4 th on buying from Bob White, he is the most honest guy out there and won't steer you wrong on a used rifle.
He is a real gentlemen.

Purchase a Rem 700 SPS Varmint in a caliber that you can readily purchase ammo to feed it.
Install a decent piece of glass on it.
Shoot it
Shoot out the barrel
Install a new barrel or barrels in different chamberings(switch barrel)

purchase reloading equipment

Attend matches of different disciplines

Any firearm production or custom-the trigger actuator is the weak link in the equation.

Mr. Dans40x has described where I am at in my shooting at the present.

I am reloading and shooting, and reloading and shooting...I only have access to 500m and the .223, .243, and .308 have done better than I expected. The .243 can handle a variety of bullet weights and has been lots of fun.

I mainly shoot 100 yards so these are just fine. I'd love to have a custom one day...I did at one time, but I didn't need that type of rifle, in my opinion, since I don't compete. Plus I want ready for a wildcat as I had just started reloading. Honestly, I think the reloading aspect has helped me more than anything in learning and getting better.

Not sure I'm any help, but I hope you find what you like and shoot well.

I found a really good 600/1000 yd range about 2 hours from home......I'm going to go to one of their F-Class shooting competitions next month.

I also found someone locally who is willing to let me sit with him and have him mentor me in reloading.......if it's something I think I'd like, I'll be investing in a reloading setup, probably will start looking at Used.....

Ordered rifle......it should arrive Tuesday.....here is a pic:

I bought a Nightforce 12-42X56 Benchrest scope with the NP-R2 reticle.

The rifle should get here in a couple of days (Tuesday).

Thanks for all the advice!

Great rifle!

Good plan, and the 7mm is plentiful with ammo choices, and if you begin to reload, there are lots of options.

Keep us posted.
