First groundhog sighting this year.

I saw it while I was driving yesterday, it was on a bank about 100 yds. off the road. The temperatures have been really warm for this time of the year here in S/E Pennsylvania and the grass is starting to turn green as well. I have noticed that some holes look like they have been cleaned out but this was the first actual groundhog I have seen. It got me pretty excited too, lol.

Same around my neck of the woods, not as much snow this year, so far, and I have seen several now coming out and sunning on rocks, when the sun is nice a bright. Will start making some runs and look for more very shortly, if the weather does not change back to storms. Awful early for warmer weather here, so far.

If only there were a place to hunt them. Farmers around here used to love it when you groundhog hunted. Fast forward a few generations, and the farms are off limits.

That's not good, sorry to hear that. The farmers around here welcome us to hunt groundhogs and some actually get mad when we don't show up for a while. We hunt several Amish farms and one, when we asked if we could hunt groundhogs on his farm, he asked us how much we charged. I told him nothing, we just really appreciate him letting us hunt...When we finished hunting that afternoon there was two loafs of homemade bread on the front seat of our truck. They are really good people that I really enjoy talking to. And oh yeah, the bread was awesome too by the way!

Along the same lines as the Mennonites in my area, they welcome me onto their land to hunt. They welcome the taking out of some various critters that dig and put hole, some small, some large in their pivots. And no charge by either side. Just a solid Thank you and hand shake.

Oh man you got my juices flowing:):):):):) Can't wait for the 2020 campaign - going "hog wild";);););)

2019 was one of my best years - just love it - can't get enough of it. I'll start recon patrols in late March or early April - soon as the temperature reaches 60 degrees.

Don't like to shoot them until late April or early May after the pups are weaned but I've been fairly successful identifying females in early April / May and avoiding them - they usually come late and don't venture far from the hole / tree line. If you see a rover most likely it's a male - not absolute but a fairly accurate predictor at that time of the year.

The Ground Hog Man

Saw one yesterday morning crossing the road in front of me here in north western Pennsylvania around Cooperstown area. It was 15° when I saw it. A nice size one, didn’t look like hibernation shrunk him up much. Problem is his hole is literally 5 feet off the traveled road, he won’t last long.:D

Same here, same general vicinity, only roadkill. My crew really hammered them last year but hopefully the fields that were corn will be beans. Let the action begin. :)

I got 3 around the house/milk barn last Spring while sitting on the front porch. Looking forward to more fun this year.

Okay, you've got us all worked up now. :)

The sun has only been out here for a few days, this is the first rock chuck sighting here I've seen so far.

I always wait till at least mid to late April before engaging them in order to give the pups a chance at living.....till next year at least. ;)

Both my Furball and 20VT are ready and whining in the safe, wanting to hunt!
