First G-hog hunt of the year

Celebrated my birthday today. Just came in from the "close farm" where I killed my first 2 of 2016. The 40X 20 Tac was tuned and ready. My grandson Tim & I had scouted this farm last week and saw several young ones out and about. I tried to get him to go this evening but he's back to school in the AM. He had some homework to do before morning. Looking forward to some good hunting this summer with him.

Awesome stuff - some of my most cherished memories involve 'chuck hunting with my grandfather. It's been 40 years or more ago and although he's been gone for nearly 20 years, I frequently recall our times together.

Wow that's really neat having your grandson go with you. I was out yesterday, weather perfect, fields not so. Farmers either cutting, planting, manure spreading, etc. at most of the farms where I hunt. Ended up in a field where the corn was just coming up, about two inches high. Not ideal at all. Set up to watch two tree lines. Sat for three hours, 4:00 to 7:00 pm - no ghogs. Would have moved long before this but there was no where else to hunt.

7.15 PM - saw a head pop up in the weeds along the tree line to my left. Ranged it at 193 yards. Head disappeared. The bobbing began in earnest, up and down. Could not get a clear shot, even trying to time the shot wasn't a great plan, weeds too high, poor profile, etc. Didn't have much hope the hog would venture into the corn field, nothing to eat. Never seen them eat corn shoots. A four point buck emerged from the other tree line, horns in velvet. He moved off.

7:47 PM - Mr. Hog decided to come out, why I don't know, he didn't start feeding just came and walked along the tree line. I pulled the 223 Weatherby Supervarmint Master up on the shooting stick and waited for a broad side shot which didn't happen. He quarter to me so I sent the 55 grain Nosler. I heard the classic thump and he rolled over R.I.P. Only one I saw that night. Number 16 this season.
