First F Class Match...Much Thanks!

Joe C

Student of the 1911.
Hello,

Just wanted to share with you folks on here. Today I shot my first ever F-Class match at ENGC in Nebraska. It was a 600 yard match and was a fabulous time. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. I knew several of the guys from an orientation I went to last year and a shooting buddy of mine (Herb) and I went out on Thursday so I could shoot at the range and get a feel for things.

Weather today was perfect in my opinion with temps topping out around 68 degrees and winds out of the SW at about 3-5mph. Sky started off overcast but cleared up as the third strings were being fired.

The match at ENGC is a 20x3 course of fire with two sighters to start each string of 20 for a total of 66 rounds.

As this is something I've wanted to do for years it was really awesome to be laying on the line for the first time. And, the rifle in .240 NMC that Randy Gregory built along with the stock that Carl Bernosky built me did very well. The new rest that Bob "The Viper" Pastor did for me not only turned heads but guided the rifle smoothly and with precision. I even managed to keep all my shots in the 9, 10, and X ring.

I also had the pleasure of shooting next to my friend Herb who shot a total of 598-31X with back to back 200's on the second and third relay with his .284 Winchester...he won the match.

Here is Herb shooting his Open rig:

Working the pits was something I had also never done but found very satisfying. There is something really cool about seeing the down range accuracy first hand the moment it happens. And it was actually enjoyable to know that I was giving good fast accurate service to the shooter.

So much thanks to all of those that have helped in making a dream come true of finally being able to shoot F Class competition. This is way more fun than you guys ever let on! ;-)

Oh ya, in case you are wondering I shot a 196-6X, 193-6X, 194-6X for a total of 583-18X which put me 5th overall and 4th in F-Open. It was a very pleasing day indeed.

Those are good scores Joe, congratulations on your first F/Class. I have found that being involved all day in an F/Class shoot is a hoot. Shoot, score, and pull targets, it all makes for a great day.

Highpower is a gas! It does not matter what division your shooting in. We are all in it together and in support of each other, be it sling or F/class!

Congrats on getting your first match under your belt! F-Class is addicting ;D

I met Herb a few years ago when he came to a benchrest match that I run. Its good to see he's enjoying a successful shooting program out there.

Great read Joe, glad you had a great time to top it off....

Getting ready for next match already......?

Rod

Thanks for all the kind words fellas. It was most certainly a gas.

AJ, yes, Herb is a great guy and it was awesome to shoot with him on Thursday and then again on Saturday.

Rod, well, maybe...LOL! My rest base is going off to Bob this week for the final stage...powder coating.

Greg, if I remember correctly you did very well yourself with that TR stick and a...593 was it! Congrats on the win! To answer your question, the .240NMC was developed by Randy Gregory and Steve Knutson. They came out with it before the XC but it is very similar. I use .22-250 cases, neck them up to 6mm, then fire form them which blows the body out to a .308 taper and the shoulder to 28degrees. On Saturday I was running non coated 107 SMK's with N150 powder at a velocity of 2940. My come up from 100 yards is 12MOA for 600 and around 31MOA for 1000 yards. Not a lot of data out there on the round but the XC loads will cross over nicely in most cases.

The only thing I ask Greg, is when you come back from SD to shoot again, bring the same weather with you!

Joe C, great post! I shot F class (FT/R) for the first time in that match, as well. I enjoyed spotting and working the pits almost as much as I enjoyed actually shooting!

The match was very well run. My compliments to Mr. Brabner! There were some phenomenal shooters present. I was lucky enough to be squadded with my friend Mike Gehrig, who took 2nd place in FT/R that day. That was pretty exciting! I had a great time at the match, met some good people, and learned a lot.

Work schedule won't permit me to shoot another match until the fall. Until then, good shooting fellas!
