I have on a logan 11" lathe with 2.125" nise thread trying to do more than lathe should be asked to do. That is why I mentioned it. Not just pulling crap out of my ass and slinging it on the wallHas anybody actually had this happen on a threaded spindle? I've got a SB13 with a 2.25x8 spindle and I've even tried to break it loose in reverse with as deep a cut as I can manage and nada.

Some people do things they are taught making them think its the best way. I call it hero worship when you do things your mentor or somebody teaches you like a robot and never understand why or try to figure out a better way. I like a small groove just for fitment purposes but i cut it in after threading. Maybe its an “anti chicken groove”?Very nice work! It's rewarding, isn't it?
"Chicken groove..." I prefer to call it a relief grooveI did some work a couple years ago for an old (like me) cranky (unlike me) gunsmith. I grind my own hss tools and threaded a barrel shank right up to the shoulder. Man that guy ripped me a new one. "They do that at the factory 'cause it's fast and cheap. We do custom work and take our time to do the job right or we don't do it at all!"
Funny because I was taught a relief groove is a shortcut, the best practice is to not cut a relief groove.
I always cut a relief now. It compromises nothing.
