First 6br project.

I am ready to start my first 6br build, and am looking for some

advice and/or suggestions.,Don't be afraid of hurting my

feelings). One thing to keep in mind, this rig will not be used

in competition.


1. Savage target action RB/LP.
2. 1:8 medium heavy Hart or Pac-Nor barrel.
3. Sharp Shooters Long Range Benchrest stock.
4. 6.5x-20x Leupold or Nikon scope


I plan on going with a no-turn chamber for Lapua brass, and

shooting 105gr.-108gr. match bullets.


Questions
1. Savage action: True it up or use as is?
2. Bushing dies or standard dies?
3. Have a gunsmith chamber and fit barrel or let manufacturer do it?


Any other technical info will be greatly appreciated.

204shooter--Sounds like you would have a winner there to me. I picked up one of the new Savage target actions last year. I had Shilen chamber one of their match barrels for me in 12 twist. I bought a "Go-Gage" and a barrel vice and installed it myself.I used the stock you are referring to and I thought the quality of the stock was outstanding. I used that same scope. I use the bushing dies. I think it prolongs your brass life and allows you easy control over neck tension. I know you mentioned your not going to compete with this rifle, but I bet you want it to shoot great. This is my second 6mmbr and I must say that cartridge has become my outright favorite. I still love my 220 swift and 257 Weatherby,and other rifles, but man that 6mmbr just shoots with such ease. My other 6mmbr has a Lilja 8 twist three groove barrel on a Remington action. With Berger 88LD, Sierra 107's and Hornady 105 Amax this is the most accurate rife I have ever owner.You actually have to work pretty hard to shoot a bad group with that gun. The Savage setup is killer accurate too. I'm shooting Berger 80 gr. bullets out of it for 600 yard work. Every time I leave the range and head home those 6mmbr rifles leave me with a great big grin on my face. I think you will be very pleased with your choices.Let us know how your project works out.

I think you have a good "blueprint" for your rifle. The SharpShooter Long-Range stock is a very good value.

A couple thoughts -- 1) You may want more magnification. This helps you aim more precisely at long range. I was very impressed with the new Sightron 8-32X scope I previewed at Shot Show. Price-wise, it's not much more expensive than the Nikon.

2) Bushing dies allow you to adjust neck tension. However, I've had very good luck with a standard FL sizing die that had the neck honed to provide about .0015" tension. If you buy a Forster 6BR Full-length die, Forster will hone the neck to your desired dimension for another $10.00. Assuming about .001 springback and a 0.2695" loaded round, a .267" honed neck will give you .0015" tension.

3) I prefer to have a gunsmith cut the chamber. The manufacturers can do a good job, but a good gunsmith is probably going to put a little more time and effort into it, and his reamer,hopefully, but not necessarily) is a bit newer.
