firing pin spring

Gents,

I was just wondering what weight firing pin spring most of you would
use for a 6 Br. ? Im running a factory spring at the moment but I could
use a lighter bolt lift in the rapids,Im a highpower shooter).

,Rem 700 action)

Just some random thoughts here.

Thanks for any thoughts in the matter.

May one assume the cocking ramp and lugs have been polished/greased? Longer bolt handles are helpful. On my Tikka I filed the bottom of my bolt handle flat and grooved it to make it easier to grab with one finger. Best mod ever for me.

Lonnie,

Good question...I will offer my imput in that I think you are asking the weight in say lbs when depressing the pin assembly onto a scale.
I have seen spring pressure as high as 26 and as low as 16..

18 to 22 lbs has been used for comp. in the after market actions I have checked.

However, the weight figure is only part of what you need to be considering.

Weight of spring, number of coils, pin travel to primer and all moving components play a roll in what happens when the pin leaves the sear and is re-cocked again.
Also important in this process would be the timing of open and closing helix to enable smooth opperation of the complete cycle from firing to the next if you will.

After market or custom acton builders of competion type actions look very close at smooth operation and lock time, impact energy to insure best operation and performace.

Firing pin assembies are available with lighter spring pressures and pins to do what you are looking for.

Iam only one of many manufactures that offer such an assembly, to help performance of firing process.
You need also look at correcting the opening helix engagement, this may require a gunsmith that has experience in doing so.ie relocating the bolt handle possition for the fix.

This all leads one down, or up the trail to a custom action with all fuctions addressed to help you shoot small.

Hope this explanation helps you.

First ! Thanks for your reply, you hit the nail on the head. Your explanation was exactly what I was looking for. Im already neck deep in the 700 action so I will have to stay with it for this rifle.

However my next rifle will certainly have a custom action.
