Firing pin question?

I have been working up loads for 4 different small wildcat cartridges. I have an older rem 700 switch barrel setup. It’s difficult to follow pressure signs when they all crater from the soppy firing pin. My question is, would I be better off having the bolt bushed or putting in a Holland’s oversized accelerated firing pin kit? Thanks

Greg tannel does the best job of bushing a bolt. I also had him replace my firing pin with one of his low lock time pin and spring. Best money i spent

Unfortunately he isn’t accepting new work right now.

If you have a standard REM 700 short action and the FP is 0.075", and you are running mostly SRP, I would recommend you switch to the 0.068" or 0.062" dia FP in general.

With all the options for small or large primer pockets lately, I have noticed a trend where the standard Rem firing pin dia doesn't play well with the latest popular PRS cartridges in small rifle primer and yet doesn't have this tendency with large primers.

I have no idea why, but I have seen it often enough to know that if you like the SRP brass options, you will want the smaller diameter firing pin options to avoid problems.

Greg has done my Rem bolts and I hope he gets back to taking in new work soon. His Rem 700 bolt mods are very high class and I won't bother with another Rem 700 based project if he won't take it.

With all the Rem corporate turmoil, I went with custom actions for any new projects the last several years and never looked back. Those come with the smaller FP in the first place and don't give me any primer issues regardless of type or pressure.

Needed to have my Open Mosin re-bushed ; and in conversation with Grimstod , He suggested turning the F/P down . I sent him a extra one , and He did them both . Now have a small dia. bushing in the bolt , and matching F/P's . Not a moments problem since , 8,000 rounds later . Smaller diameter is definitely the way to go , in my opinion . Even if you're using LR primers , but a near "must" , on SRP .

Been shooting a Rem 700 for 51 years. I only get a very small crater around the primer indent. From my experience a very small crater is normal and it gets bigger as you increase the powder charge. If it's big your shooting very hot loads. I call the crater the high ridge around the primer indent. The size of the ridge is a pressure indicator. It's how far the primer cup was pushed into the FP hole.
