Fireing pin bushings

Need some clarification.
I've got a model 700 bdl Rem. short action that I would like to re-barrel to 6.5X47L. It's in 308 so the bolt is okay but I keep reading about primer piercing and ruined bolt faces if max. loads are overdone. I've read that it's necessary to use max. loads to achieve the vel. that this cal. needs for max. accuracy. Which I guess results in a certain amount of pierced primers. This brings up fireing pin bushings that take care of the problem. What are they and will they add much to the price of the barrel job? Kind of a newbie on this problem. Seems like it would be more prudent to back off a few grains when the primers started smokeing. Anyway any input is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I had mine done at gre-tan in colorado and never looked back.Turn around is about a week or so and he is top notch. It costs about a hundred bucks after all is said and done.

Greg Tannel at Gre-Tan Rifles. The issue is the fit. He does a fine job, at a very fair price. You can have it done at any time. It does not have to be done in conjunction with rebarreling.

Thanks for the info. I got on the Gre-Tan web site. He has an after market fireing pin and shroud for around $65.00. Does this take care of the problem because of a better fit like closer tolerances? How would this prevent primer piercing? And what are the effects of pierced primers? I shot with a man a few years back shooting a customised mauser action. The primers were being pierced and actually washed out the bolt face around the fireing pin hole. Is this a problem with the 6.5 X47L? I guess it can't be much of a problem because there are a lot of people shooting this caliber and winning. Thanks again for the quick reply.

When Greg bushes a firing pin a steel bushing is fitted so that the hole that the pin tip rides in is a much better fit, and the bushing is long enough so that the tip of the pin remains in the hole throughout its entire cocking an firing cycle. This is not the case with stock Remingtons, or all pin bushing jobs by other gunsmiths. In addition, he reduces the tip diameter to around .062 which runs back far enough so that the entire portion that rides within the bushing is that diameter. Smaller firing pin tip diameters are less prone to blanking primers, and the improved fit helps solves the cratering problem that is common when hot loads are used with the rather generous factory clearances. To have your firing pin sleeved, the entire bolt will be needed. I have had several friends have this done, all with good results, and a quick turn around. If you decide to have your bolt done, I would give him a call.

I have been hunting and shooting guns for many, many years and never had a problem but i guess it serves a purpose if it is needed.

It's certainly something that many shooters may never need to have done. BUT it's awesome having somebody as capable as Greg Tannel ready & willing to do it for those who understand what it will do to enhance their shooting.

Three years ago I had a LR rifle built on an RPA Quadlite action by Carl Bernosky. First time at the range after I took delivery I noticed craters around the fp indent & it bothered me. Sent the bolt to Greg, had it back in a week & never looked back. Rifle will shoot X's at 1,200 yards one after the other if I'm paying attention, never another crater either. Money well spent.

I have shot several new Remingtons the last couple of years that have cratered primers with factory ammo. Last one was a mod. 7 CDL in 17 fireball with factory ammo. Just received the bolt back with one from 17 Rem. I have had several years and has always cratered primers. I have never blanked a primer with them but always cratered. Gre-tan only way to go, received back in less rhan week. Bill
