Fireforming false shoulder crush?

Ok, first time false shoulder case forming.....6mm Lapua br to dasher....mandrel up to .257, resize to .243...all going good....cases in gun, bolt closes hard.....think, maybe if I measure the "false shoulder" with Hornady oal gauge with a 28 insert (.284) I can set to a length that the bolt closes tight, but not really cranking on it. First custom action/ rifle, so I get nervous alittle. The bolt closes with some force, but not "hard" after moving measurement about .003 back, xxx.024 to xxx.021. Does this sound about right? I know not being able to feel it yourself it's all a guess, but any advice would ease my mind. Also plan to jam about .010....rsbhunter

Not a whole lot to be concerned with. Most simply run the .243 expander in the necks to make sure its round and then bushing of choice for neck tension. Fire form. This is what I did when fire-forming to the 6BRX with no issues at all. I did make sure the bullet was jammed @ .015 in the lands per my Smith.

Yes. No need to jam the bullets but it may make you feel better. Do keep your lugs greased.

Yes on the lugs , should I go with a a top 6br load, or up to a medium dasher load, 29.0 gr RL15.5. VS 32.5gr rl15.5 with 109gr hybrid ( am fireforming during a informal match)....rsbhunter

Think I'm going with 29.5 Berger and a 105gr Berger boat tail target bullet.....I had actually started to load with a dasher load...sound like it will do the job?...glad I pulled my head out! rsbhunter

Thank you very much, have a match coming up on the 30th, I will try to remember to post how it goes...Again, thanks to all of you....been reloading a long time, but the collective knowledge here makes me a novice....rsbhunter

Another method you can try that is easy and works well.

Don't expand with a mandrel.
Virgin Lapua has a lots of neck tension... And works great for jam and shoot fire forming.

Take the plunger out of the bolt.
Load with 30gr varget
Seat a 105
Jam and shoot...

It's that easy.

I did consider the jam and shoot method, most people strongly suggested using Fed 205 primers as they are "softer". I thought I only had CCI 450's , so I ordered the mandrel. As I use a mandrel on my normal loads anyway, it really isn't more work. I just ran the mandrel in, full length resized, to form shoulder, cleaned lube off, and annealed. The funny thing is, after looking through my supplies, I did find 1k of Federal GM205M primers that I used in these loads.....so I'm thinking this might go off without any problem..... Will keep you all posted...rsbhunter

You’ll do fine.

Thanks, there is always something about having an explosion in close proximity to my face and hands that cause a small droplet of sweat to roll down my neck!!! This site is the greatest... rsbhunter
