fireforming 7mm tcu brass

a question on forming 7mm tcu brass from .223.

from what i understand..... i run the case trough the sizing dies that sizes the brass to 7 mm. them trim.,don't have Length off hand) ...... then load with a lite load to fire form the brass to the sharper shoulder. then i can re-size the necks only and then load to appropriate loads. do i have this right. is there a better way of doing it? is it okay to fire form the brass out of the barrel that i am going to be doing all my shooting out of, or should i have a specified barrel for that. thanks, Brian.

Brian,

From my experience it is doubtful you will have to do any trimming. Seat the bullets for the first firing way long, so they are jammed into the rifling. This will help head space the cartridge.

Also, the fireforming rounds will likely be about as accurate as fireformed ones. I'd suggest you go ahead and load them up and have some fun at the range, or wherever. At least that was my experience.

I did 6.5 TCU for many years. I'd just run a .223 case thru the die. My friend, JD Jones, always recommended using 85% of max dose of original powder for fireforming. Done that for 40+ years without problems.

I shot 7tcu for 40 years in Rem XPs and T/C contenders I NEVER wasted supplys on fireforming load the brass and shoot! Until you are a very good shooter you will never notice the differance between new brass old brass fireformed or not. PS I was an international class shooter in IHMSA. Have fun it 7 tcu was the winningest cartridge in IHMSA!
