fire forming brass question

I am resizing some 300 win mag to 308 norma mag cause i have an abudounce of 300 win mag brass. I will need to fire form them so i am looking for a enexpesive way to do this. what kind of powder and a bullet or any other ideas for it.

thanks for the help.

Why do you need to FF your brass? Isn't the 308 Norma a little shorter than the 300 win? If I remember right it is in the 2.56 inch length range vs 2.62 for the winny. I would think that you could just run the win brass through the norma fl sizer and trim to length.

I have never done it...it's just a guess. Some of you bigtime wildcatters and those experianced in case forming should chime in.

I just checked.....the numbers above are correct. And the neck - sholder junction is .1 inch shorter on the Norma than the winny. Sholder angles are both 25 degrees (25 deg 30 min on the winny).

Should simply be able to just bump and shoot.

I know that the odds are slim but I always worry about somebody picking up a case that looks almost like the parent case and shooting it in the chamber it was made for. That could result in a case separation with serious consequences. I would think about the savings versus the risk somewhere down the line. Just my 2 cents from an old worry-wort!. Tom

I did run one through my sizer die and where the taper is it's not perfectly squarded off like the norma is. the corners arent sharp like the factory brass is. so i justdidnt know if that was gonna effect it at all as far as the preasures go.

Both cartridges headspace on the belt so there should not be any concerns regarding headspace or safety.

I'd do like 4x said - FL size, trim, load and shoot.

Is the .300 Win mag brass new, or old case hardened by repeated firings?

If it's the latter, I'd throw it away, [or retain it for use in the same chamber that it was formed in] and then purchase new .308 Norma brass for fire forming in the .308 Norma chamber.

Use the powder you intend to reload the .308 with on a regular basis, and some inexpensive .308 bullets.

Call me old fashioned, but shot cuts, in my humble opinion, never seem to produce an acceptable end product, at least not for me.

The .300 Win mag brass has been fired once and not repeatly fired.

Once brass has been fired in a specific chamber I'm not inclined to ever use it in different chamber, even if it's of the same caliber.

You could anneal it to make it more usable.I am sure there is someone like me who would do it for free. If thats an option ,let me know.

What is anneal?

Everything you want to know about annealing is here: http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/annealing/

Darrell Jones offers annealing services here: http://www.djsbrass.com/ If you're just annealing 15 cents per case is the cost, plus $6 for shipping.

Actualy, if you are shortning brass you can bump the sholders back just enough to actualy headspace off of the sholder. I bump them just enough so I can just close my bare bolt on the sized brass.

I was doing some pricing and by the time I buy some bullet's,powder, primers and new .300 win mag brass i'll be able to buy norma brass for a few dollars more and save a crap load of time and money.

thanks to all who replied.
