Finicky 308 win ?

my search game must be weak today.

What twist do I need on a 308 win for 150 - 165 gr hunting bullets?

Thanks for any insight.

1:10 on some places is indicated to be for heavier bullets like 180gr

A 1:10 twist will certainly work, as will 1:11 and 1:12. Most factory rifles will be either 1:10 or 1:12 in .308.

I use the a 10" twist 308win for everything from 125 gr to 200 gr.

No ill effects from over spin. Can't say the same for my 6mm fast twist barrels shooting light bullets.

Almost any twist available in 308 will be fine for those weight bullets. I feel the best all around is 1:10.

1-12 twist is SAAMI spec. for 308win. Also a 12 twist will stabilize up to a conventional 190gr bullet (not solids etc...)

I've run 8, 10, 11, 11.25 and 12 twist.

A 10 twist will do what ever you want.

Go with the 1-11 twist rate. This twist rate was particularly developed for those that can not make up their mind between 1-10 and 1-12!;) Seriously though, it's that simple, and you can't go wrong.

Over 30 years ago, a wise old shooter gave me that same advise when I was stymied as to what barrel twist (10 or 12) to re-barrel my NM M1A with...he was right.

I would recommend a 12 twist IF you were only shooting a 155gr Palma bullet, but seeing you’re shooting 150-165gr bullets, then a 10 or 11 would suffice.
There’s certainly nothing wrong with a 12 twist though.
I ran a 13 twist for Palma matches personally.

Cheers.

Update: Ok, so I had this all put together for my friend.

A squared up rem 700 s.a.
A proof 10 twist cf barrel 24"
Hs stock.

I tried finding a load for it today and it was finicky. The opposite of any 308 I've ever shot.

I tried nosler 150 partitions with :
W748
Varget
Vv n140

Best was about 1 1/4"

But,.....it loved rem factory core-lokt 150's left over from the 80's. 1/2" group

And,... 125gr ballistic tips of all things...one hole.

Are there any idiosyncrasies with the proof cf barrels I don't know about?

Any clue which direction to try next?

The three that I have had I have had just the opposite results they are not finicky at all , But mine are not 308 caliber

Looks like finding a reamer with the correct free bore length for those bullets is your only decision left for you to make!?

This is a hunting rifle..

I very been reading up on ladder testing.
That's next.

Magazine box is 2.84

So far @ 2.80 the barrel likes:

150 speer grand slam - 1 hole... like 6br 1 hole.

150 core lokts 1/2" group

125 ballistic tips 1/2 "
110gr something 1/2"
