Fine duplex or dot???

Tell me what you use and like....or pros/cons to each. I have never used a dot and thinking about it on my new scope. Bad thing is I have never shot with one to know if I would even like it.

Thanks.

I have both. I prefer the dot for single shot targets and the cross hairs for group shooting. Personal taste and shooting activity dictates which reticle you prefer.

I have two Sightrons. 8-32 with a 1/4 inch dot and a 10-50 with 1/8 inch dot. I shoot 300 and 600 yard league with them and feel the 1/4 is a little too big for my liking. I love the 1/8 inch for that use.

My favorite is a med-fine crosshair -for all shooting.
A crosshair keeps your eye from playin tricks, and is way easier to use for varmint hunting than a dot.

Different strokes for different folks...
I prefer the NP2-DD for all my shooting chores, especially varmint hunting.
NF states they are good for low light hunting also...
I like the 1/8th dots on my 2 Sightrons also, but miss the horizontal bars that are on my Nightforce NP-2DD's.
I shoot at 1/4" circles at 100 yards and the dot just seems to settle in the middle really easy.. Same thing at 300 yards with a 3/4" circle...

I have both also. I prefer the fine X hairs for BR score shoots & the dot for groundhog shoots & gh hunting.

I prefer the standard duplex since it's easier for me to see while varmint hunting especially in changing light conditions.

In fact, about five years ago I sent two my Leupold's back to the factory and had the fine duplex replaced with their standard duplex.

Benchrest clay and steel shoots only. I hate shooting groups.

Thanks so far guys!

For that type of shooting , I would prefer a floating dot.....it is only one aiming point vs a crosshair which to me takes more effort to "split" your target. The question is what size dot? Depends how good your eyes are, and the size of the target. You don't want the dot to cover the whole target, yet not that small that you have to search for it.
Each has their own preference.....if fact I am somewhat opposite madmixerman in that I use a dot for IBS score and crosshairs (Duplex) for hunting (albeit big game)
Edit- If the events you plan to compete in vary in distance (say 100 thru 400 yds) with-in the same match, then I would prefer a reticle like Leupolds varmint hunter, rather than turning knobs.

Yes...I guess I should've mentioned no targets are less than 200m. Don't ask me why they do meters cuz I haven't a clue :)

Furthest at this point was 750yds.

Edit - One event we do have to shoot a 100m group but not something I would buy a scope around. Just not a paper puncher. If I took it that serious I would just buy/build a 30br for that piece of the event.

I have 1/8 dot, FCH, NF CH3 and NF NP2DD. All around, I like the FCH and NF CH3 best.

My hunter benchrest rifle has a 6X20 Weaver Grand Slam with a 1/8 moa dot and very fine cross hair so I have both to use, but I usually only pay attention to the cross hair. If I try to focus only on the dot I seem to get eye strain and am more aware of small movment. My F-TR build will have a medium fine central cross hair and mil dots which may or may not prove useful, I'll just have to wait and see.

i have both. the dots (smaller the better) for target shooting look like the bullet hole you want to place and when it happens, you feel like you have really done your homework! the dot will dance around letting you know you are not completely stable. varmint hunting with dots can be challenging when shooting into shadows. the np2dd has the horizontal lines drawing your attention to the central dot and with practice comes easy. you would be best served if you could look thru scopes with the different reticles, then you would know what best suits your needs.

For target work, I have found a fine x wire easier to use for holding off. Dot cannot be fine tuned, but I use many of them.

Give me the dot for the groundhogs. Makes for a quick pick up. Fine crosshairs or 1/8 dot for paperwork. Chevys & Fords, I guess.
