finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua, new powder

So 15 months and a hunk of change later, I finally have it in my hands. BAT action, kreiger barrel 1:8 twist 28" with tunable brake, jewel 2 ounce trigger with the roller thing he suggested - sorry I'm not full speed on terminology yet, nighforce competition 2014 with I believe kelbly rings - I regret not asking for full build info. I had some head space issues first trip up, and got no more than 2 shots out of 5 rounds per charge, one set of 5 had all 5 ftf. So I switched to lighter primers as advised and bingo. So, first real group, at 200 yards shot ok I thought, measuring .533" using RL 17 and berger 108. So far I'm happy and cant wait to see that group tighten up! Oh and I got a model 1200 rest from TSI to try out. The stock color is the paint code off my s10, haven't snapped a pic of the two together yet haha.

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

I'll be getting some more stuff like that soon, I just haven't gotten it yet. I should have bought all this stuff while waiting for the rifle :o I Used that bag and front rest from Caldwell for my other rifles though and it worked alright.

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

Any reason you use your front rest backwards?

If you spin it around you can use the stop which is pretty handy.

the top itself flips. and i had it the other way prior to this pic. someone told me i had it backwards but apparently it wasn't. If i turn it the other the way then i'd have to reach out around to tighten the clamp for main elevation adjustment. flipping the top back to how i had it would allow me to use the stop, so yes that part is backwards. i should have left it go like i had it when i first installed the top!

what do you mean specifically?

Simple....when making fine elevation adjustments you simply turn the knob on the rear leg of the rest. It seems that to make proper adjustments you need to turn BOTH the left and right leg knobs.

The rest is positioned backwards in the photo. The "Y" goes to the front, the single leg to the back, closer to the shooter. Fine elevation is done from the single screw at the rear. Otherwise you get cant. The large adjustment feature on this rest appears a bit awkward, located at the front, but that is a design issue, not a use issue.

A quick review of bench technique by watching the PPC guys shoot on youtube will help get you through rest application and set up. That will improve your groups. NICE rifle, BTW

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

A lot of guys including myself when I had my 6x47 shoot H 4350 with good results. Nice rig!! p.s. You should have a donut bag under your rear bag it will keep bag from moving and will not allow it to torque side to side as easy.

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

Thanks for the input guys, I'm still learning this thing. I have been told several ways to "use" the rest so far. The stops for elevation adjustment are on one side and the front, not side and side. I didn't know if you meant a finer adjustment than that because that's the only elevation, again, new to this type of rest. I'm used to my cheapo caldwell ;D but yeah, I'll be at the range again next weekend and we'll actually spend some time with the rest. I do need to get the donut like you guys have mentioned. I've been getting sidetracked a lot financially lately, bought a silverado and a police 223 :o and the sightron 10-50x60 will be here monday ;D
But again, thanks for all the info and advice, it's always appreciated!

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

I have to wear a bib while admiring your rig because of the large drool factor. Big congrats.
I will be rude and ask a couple of questions: How much does it weigh? And retail price on the cost? Thank you.

OK...quick lesson. You technically have Two ELEVATION ADJUSTMENTS. You also have a "gun stop" which you are not using.

Next time you are at the range, turn the rest around so that the single leg is in the rear. Adjust your elevation with the wheel and lock knob as you usually do. Now, get down and look through your scope and turn the knob on the back of the rear leg (the one that you use to "level" the rest on the bench) back and forth. That is your FINE ELEVATION ADJUSTMENT.

The other thing is the gun stop. That verticle rod with the black cap on it that is now out front of your front bag (because you turned your rest around)...that is the "STOP". Raise that up to a point where it is just short of touching your BBL. Now when you slide your gun ahead, you slide it forward till the stock hits the rod.....every shot.....over and over. It is a repeatabilaty thing....every thing the same ....every shot. It also looks like yours is adjustable front to back!! That is great...you can fine tune where on the stock you want the gun to sit on the bag.

Unless they have a joy stick type front rest, every BR shooter that I know uses the rear leg height adjustment as the fine elevation adjustment while shooting a match. I suppose that there are a few bag squeezers" out there, but they are very few. Give this a try and let us know how it works out. I am convinced that you will shoot smaller groups...maybe MUCH smaller. Your gun handling will improve and your speed will increase....both CRITICAL for shooting small!!!!

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

Seems like I have been using not only my front rest incorrectly, but my rear bag too! :o

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

All of that noted! Thank you I'll get to try it all out this weekend. I didn't think of the rear foot as the fine elevation. I did flip the top around and was sliding the end of the stock up against the stop every time.

Re: finally got my rifle, 6x47 lapua

Loaded up some H4350 , 37, 37.5, 38, 38.5, and 39.0 and slowed down a little bit and played with the rest a little before shooting. I still need to perfect my position but I feel as thought I got a little better. Sitting more behind it vs next to it. But here are the results. Going to load a ladder between 37.5 and 38.5 in smaller increments and see how it does then move to seating depth. 37.5 measured .610 and 38.5 measured .672, all groups 5 shots. If the top one on the 38.5 didn't go high I would have had almost half the size group >:( this was at 200 yards

I get slightly better groups with H4350 than I get with Re17 at about the same weights you are finding accurate. One other thing nobody has mentioned is bag lube. Leather bags use talcum powder and synthetic bags use spray on Silicone to make them slippery. Vertical groups usually mean you need to add just a tad more powder if your other techniques are proper. Tom

I forgot the most important thing----WIND FLAGS! In looking at your groups the 37.5 group would have been a very good group if the wind was blowing from the left to right and you were not holding for corrections. A wind from the left moves a bullet down as well as left in a right twist barrel so varying winds would push some further left and down, A group on that angle is typical of what a wind from the left would do to you. I would look at that load again. Tom

Tom, I've got a question for you. If a wind from the left, will move a right twist barrel's POI down and to the left, will a wind from the right move the POI to the right and up?

my bad, moves bullet down and right! Wind from the right moves bullet left and up. Was thinking of the group and got carried away typing. I never considered wind until I bought a very accurate benchrest rifle in 6ppc some years back and once a month at the match would try to put 5 shots in one hole at 100 yards. I always hated to draw the very left bench like the one where the picture in this post was taken as the wind from the left would swirl more than three benches over would. I shot with 3 flags at 100 as my brain could not manage all 5 flags that is customary but you can soon learn that not shooting in the same wind condition will make a bughole group into a 1/2" group or larger in a hurry. It is unreal how several flags will all be blowing in different directions at once! Anyway, with the very small groups shown above you will not improve upon them without wind flags in this shooters opinion cuz they are damned good now! Tom
