Finally broke down and bought the L.E. Wilson

Finally bit the bullet and decided to buy a decent case trimmer. Not been real happy with my results from the Hornady so, hopefully the Wilson will be more precise.
I picked this one up.

I also bout New/Fl sized and Fired case holders for my 6.5, .308 and 6BR
I plan on buying a K&M Neck turner next and know its critical to have exacting length cases prior to trimming so, I hope this resolves that issue.

Any tips or tricks from the guys that already own one would be appreciated. :)

I initially had some difficulty keeping trimmed length uniform. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but through trial and error I discovered my problems were due to the case holder clamp. I use a battery powered drill instead of the hand crank and simply hold the case holder in place with my hand. That method is faster and I'm now able to hold + - .0005" almost 100 percent. I'm very happy with this trimmer. One thing I may try is their carbide cutter. My current cutter leaves a little more burr than I like, but the chamfer operation removes that nicely.

I hear many say they have had some issues initially but, found out its critical to make sure to keep the case holder pushed backwards against the adjustment rod to elleviate any variable in length.
Thanks for your input :)

For me, it was awhile before I learned consistent case seating in the holder. After that, everything was very simple.

Since I just bought the trimmer and am awaiting its arrival I would love to hear users best defined methods for seating case into the holder.
Might give me an edge in the learning curve. :)

Just tap the base of the cartridge against the flat, round, plastic that comes with the trimmer. To remove, tap the opposite end. It's not rocket science. The important thing is keeping the base of the cartridge square and solid against the stop.

I don't remember getting flat round plastic when I got mine. I have a short (4"?) piece of 2x4 that I use. It becomes second nature after the 3rd-4th time you use the trimmer. I can't see me using another going forward. I bought the power adapter that allows me to utilize a rechargeable screwdriver. It is the most consistent trimmer I ever used.

Good luck

Gerald

I use a hockey puck to tap the case on, it was on cleareance for a buck. Works great for me, just a little tap for seating and for removal.

Good Move! I did the same some five years ago which made my life alot easier when reloading. I too got real tires of the inconsistencies in case length when I had a Lyman Universal POS Trimmer. And actually, I next bought a Redding 2400 (has the mic adjustment feature) which is actually a good Trimmer that I still use for AR casings. But that Wilson is so precise on anything it cuts and once you set the length, the Trimmer repeats so consistently that only changes need to be made when changing brass brands because of casing head thickness differences. Also, I too have the same casing holders you just bought and they are simple to use. I ended up mounting my Wilson Trimmer on a small piece of press board that I lock between the jaws of a vice I have mounted at the end of my reloading table that holds the Trimmer steady. That makes it easier to move down the line of prepping cases for reloading. But you'll enjoy that baby as the headaches of inconsistency are now history.

I have the Wilson case trimmer, in the big inning I was concerned about the handle. it is copper, so I dug deep and found another one (trimmer) just in case.

I get better feel holding the case holder by hand also. The clamp can allow movement, doing by finger pressure ensures every case is held the same and any chatter felt. I also recommend cleaning the caseholders inside and out before each use.

This is my 20+(?) year old Wilson. At the time a mount wasn't available so I made one using a piece of 2"x14" alum angle and machined it's "clamps". The base a piece of mahogany.

The pad is a piece of some kind of plastic stuff I found in the shop at work. Its not hard or soft but something in betwix. I've lightly tapped literally thousands of pieces of brass in and out of it's holders without and any measurable damage.
Another bit of advice, use a sharp cutter. I have two, the one I'm using and one resharpened ready to go. When one get dull it goes back to Wilson to be resharpened.

I think it's just a grand little trimmer, I love mine it's just simple to use and I just use my left hand and press the case holder down and back gives me a little workyouty, if you work it smoothly not try to force the trimmer it works great

Received my trimmer today along with the 6 case holders I ordered.
Wow, this trimmer is fantastic. Found my shortest piece of 6br Lapua recently fired brass and made then all identical.
Spot on. Now thats a quality tool.
I see the classifieds in the Hornady trimmers future. :)
Now I just need to find a lil piece of Delron to tap the cases in and out on.
Anyone got a small piece maybe 2"x2" square 1/8-1/4 thick they can live without as I am all out of hockey pucks. LOL

i had other trimmers before but never got consistent length before i got the wilson. i tap the case in the holder on a block of wood. Main thing is keeping the case base pushed against the adjusting rod. i mounted an adjustable hold down clamp for the case holder. keep the shavings cleaned off it. im thinking of getting the micrometer adjustment. that would be handy.

Or cut a piece from a plastic cutting board from the dollar store. Tapping brass is lite duty.
