Filming targets, Cameras ?

Anyone got much experience coming targets out to say 600yd ? My target cam has been leaving me a bit... wanting lately, took it out to film some steel at 380yd the other day and yeah... for 100yd group shooting it works decent it past that egghhhh
Kinda wanna up grade to some kinda digital or something but kinda clueless. Anyone got any recommendations? Perfectly fine with an older model because heck a lot of these YouTube videos from 10years ago still have better quality then mine lol

Nah. Shooting past 1000 is lobbing them in until you hit your target. I used to do that with 22's at 300 yds when I was a kid. lol

I completely disagree with you about lobbing in to make hits at 1k.

If that's what a person is doing, they need to have a better understanding of their firearm, ballistics and their optics.
Making repeatable hits on a 10" plate at 1k isn't that difficult.

I've shot a couple of ELR matches in the last 7 months.

Your assessment isn't too far off the mark.


I guess my old varmint and BR days don't like the slap the trigger and hope for the best style of shooting.

I'd say you and I want the same thing. Small target and smaller groups on target.

First round hits at a mile aren’t difficult with a good rifle and dope.
Past about 3K it definitely gets interesting.
Past 2 miles regardless of gun and skill it’s fun but repeatability is a challenge.

I'm leaving my rifle at home and bringing a wad of cash for first round hit bets at the next 1 mile shoot in my vicinity!

Assuming you’re looking to video hits on steel at ranges like 600 yds. Your scope camera will always be dependent on the quality of your scope AND atmospheric conditions. Very good (very expensive) optics will give you a better picture, but longer distances, heat, humidity, mirage will degrade that image REGARDLESS of how good the glass is. The only solution for those conditions is to have a camera close to the target. @Mike Casselton and others have recommended the Longshot system, and it’s a good solution. They offer various packages in different price ranges. For 600 yds, you’re probably looking at $500-1,000 for a new system. You can take pictures/videos of hits within your viewing device (ipad/tablet for example). It also allows marking of impacts on target and measurements. Their higher end system can send images from a target up to 2 miles away.

If, instead, you’re shooting at paper targets, I can’t recommend the ShotMarker system highly enough. $800 plus minor costs of building a target frame to hold the sensors.

Apples and oranges ! Was at the Range yesterday 600 yards on my Shot Marker 9( Not this Topic).
Nice Guy out there also shooting at 600 Plate banger.
He had His Cell Phone on a Tri- pod by the Plate. After a shot or two He had to drive down to take a look ? Lot of time outs and driving down Range and stopping others from shooting ?
Not sure what the deal was but not my idea for fun.

I have a crazy idea ! If you shoot Paper and find the center at your yardage? Hitting plates maybe easier ?

2300 is a far as I've done.
It's a whole lot more difficult than a mile.
Like you said, first round impact on a mile target is pretty much expected. For us, that's on a standard IPSC.

On a larger targets the conditions have to be pretty crappy or like the conditions at the last match, where they were switching very quickly from 10:00-2:00.
With the winds being 8-15 with gusts to 25, well, it got a little sporty.
