Filing Rim on Norma 6 Dasher Brass

Out of the 500 pcs of Norma 6 Dasher brass I received, about 10% would not fit in my Redding #1 shell holder or the shell holder in my 21st Century priming tool. I did buy RCBS #2 and Hornady #2 shell holders which will accommodate the cases with the thicker rims.

But not really wanting to fool with swapping shell holders back and forth and realizing that the problem rims are only a few thousandths of an inch too thick, I tried filing the inside edge of the rim. See the pic below...

Guys, it worked wonderfully. I held the case head flat against the work mat and twirled the case with the fingers of my left hand. I held the one face of the rat tail file flat against the inside edge of the rim with light pressure. 10 seconds later, maybe 2 or 3 turns of the case, and retested in the shell holder. They fit perfectly!

Since I only have about 50 cases to file, it's a snap to clean them up. Then all the cases will fit in the standard #1 shell holders. I recommend you try this with the cases that have rims that are too thick. Good luck!

I finished cleaning up the 50-odd cases that originally would not fit my #1 shell holders. A few did require a little more filing than what I initially indicated but nothing extreme.

In retrospect, my opinion is, that while the rims may be slightly thicker than normal, the problem with the odd ball case that won't fit a #1 holder are burrs along the outside edge of the rim. By smoothing that edge with a file, the case will slide into the standard shell holder normally.

Not sure if these burrs, if that's actually the underlying issue, would prevent an extractor claw from grabbing the case. So far I've had no problems with any of the cases in my BAT M, Panda, or Barnard P bolts. And while it's no big deal to do a little filing on the extractor, I would suggest trying this easy cleanup on the case itself first.

Good luck!

I have seen this before on fired brass and my first thoughts are that the extractor is involved , could be bolting down or up on tight fitting cases where the space between the bolt face and the underside of the extractor hook is minimal.
