File sharpening FYI

Use chalk on the file to help prevent clogging and extent its useful life. Re-Sharpening a file…really?

I made bench-made knives for a few years and know a little bit about file maintenance. I’ve never heard about file re-sharpening.

It is worth doing, especially on a name brand file. David Christman, a gunsmith friend in Delhi, Louisiana, has been sending his out for years.

It says they use an abrasive in high pressure steam to abrade the back side of the tooth. They claim to make them sharper than new.

If anyone would like more info on this call the Colorado School of Trades in Lakewood Colorado. Our instructors sent out a test batch of old files to have sharpened to see how their work was. When the files came back they were in fact sharper than new. So sharp in fact that techniques had to be changed until the files dulled as some of the larger files would draw material much faster off a barrel and dig in if to much pressure was applied. I personally was very impressed with how easy it was to do some of the simpler projects that involved taking .050-.100" off of an edge. Matter of 5 minutes is all it took to do what took me 20 before. However be warned they do cut different and it takes some getting used to.

New technology? No.... I tried this back in the early 90's. As a working farrier I used to go through LOTS of rasps and thought this was worth a try. I found that the reworked ones didn't hold up long. I could get 8-12 horses done on a new wrasp. On a reworked one I might get 3 or 4 done. They may have improved things now, or your requirements may differ. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions.

Bill

Bill,
Not saying file sharpening is new technology. Just saying that water jet sharpening is the newer tech.
