I have a LH Ruger 77 MkII that was originally chambered in 30-06. I bought it with the intent of building it into a 6.5-06AI sporter rifle. However, I have since learned that the magazine length on the Ruger 77's is on the short side-- only able to feed rounds with a COAL of no more than 3.35"-- just barely long enough to feed a SAAMI spec 30-06. This may limit its usefulness with the long bullets I would like to use with the 6.5-06.
To get around the potential OAL problem, I am considering going with 6.5-284 NORMA instead. However, I am concerned about the potential for feeding problems if I go with this cartridge. Does anyone know what modifications would need to be made to this rifle so that it will reliably feed 6.5-284 rounds?
