I am cleaning up a 25-06 for a friend that I am guessing was built in the late 50's early 60's. Research to date shows that Federal Firearms Co. was started in 1958 as a barrel maker by Mr. Jerry Taucher at the Federal PA address and is still in operation as a retail outlet. I have tried several times to contact the company at the 412-221-0300 number listed on their web site without success.
This rifle, built on a military Mauser, has a straight 1.200x26 9/19 (to the face of the action) barrel, is not drilled for barrel mount blocks, has a very neatly stamped horse head app 5/16 tall stamped at 12 o'clock on the barrel immediately ahead of the receiver, very neatly stamped 25-06 at 9 o'clock on the barrel. The underside of the barrel, under the stock, is stamped Federal Firearms Co. Federal Pa. and is also stamped with a 5 pointed star and "BT".
The rifle is in a straight grain stock with a Fajen butt plate. The bluing and polishing are reminiscent of the 60's vintage S&W revolvers which I assume is original, overall a handsome period rifle. It is bedded in a material that has the color of Devcon. likely not original. the trigger is housed in an unmarked natural aluminum housing and has 3 adjustments which I take to be sear engagement (has a port to observe this), pull weight and overtravel. All adjustments are on the front face of the housing. The trigger is bedded to the receiver with a yellow material that appears to have sugared.
Interested in finding out more about the Federal barrels, the smith that may have built the gun, and the trigger. First two shots at 300 yards from prone with a rear bag and Sinclair "F" class bipod with the rifle were 12 o'clock, 10.5"high, .730 center to center with 117 Gr. Federal Premium BTHHP. Got lost in the weeds trying to center the group with the 24 power Japanese Tasco that came on the rifle, 7 shots later was centered and 13 shots went in the 9-10-x ring of a 12" Dirty Bird target. Scored 174*-4X.
* Edited, mistakenly had 184 was 174, X count is correct.
