Federal .308 168 Grain Sierra Match King

No already have my loads developed. I help a fellow co-worker with some classes and one of the courses discuss ballistics, powders, and so on. It was simply something for the class to take and research along with other powders and bullets.

Does anyone know or have an idea of what the factory powder and load for the federal 168 Grain match king load is.

For what it's worth, According to Dan Newberry, IMR-4064 for both the 168 and 175 grain GGM 308 loads. Same for the Military Mk316 mod 0 175 grain loads. "Build sheet" showing the specs for tbe 175 grain load. Screenshot_2017-09-27-05-42-25.png

No. Already have data for the loads. The help a co-worker with classes regarding ballistics and a part of the course is for the class to research and compare different data with factory and reloads, powders, bullets ect...
Was just looking to provide some info for them to compare.

whoops!

guess i missed that one totally. i must apologize. my mistake.

jumped to conclusions. just seen that question asked many times. someone wanting to copy some mass produced cartridge (usually a military one). First time i have ever seen someone come up with manufacturers load data too! usually they dump the powder out and look at it and smell it and try to identify it.

anyway i stepped right into this one. hope your classes go well.

No hard feelings. I've only been reloading for couple years and enjoy working up my own loads for my rifles. It is very interesting in the classes to see what students come up with though.

probably not!

why? you aren't one of.those guys wanting to duplicate a factory round are you?

why not just use the mk bullet and do the load development and.find something your rifle really likes?
Actually, sometime I do try to duplicate a factory load, i.e. the 175 Gold Medal load. Dang things shoot so well in 2 different 308's that I load for that I liad for the same perfomance. Will my rifles shoot better with optimized loads? Of course, but not by a significant margin with me driving. So I load a GMM duplucate...besides, it's nice to know that if something comes up and I don't have time to load for a match, i can go to my "stash" and grab a couple of boxes of the Gold Medals and be within an elevation click or 2 of my handloads, depending on which rig I'm running.

Yes. My 308 liked the 175 tipped MK. Friend gave me a handful to play with and found and accurate lied for that bullet. I am in same boat with you. My gun like the 168 SMK so I worked up a load that is very close to that factory. Worked out nice when I took some long range course at SMTC this past year.

I worked a load for my 308 using trail boss. Shooting the hornady 168ELDM that has done well. Haven’t played with any other powders for the subsonic loads

Nobody knows , they blend powder to get what they want... The Sierra manual list RL-13 I THINK , check for yourself to be sure , as their accuracy load.. I like imr-4064....

Don’t know about military contracts but your commercial ammo varies. Manufacturers load to a specific velocity at a specific pressure. Since they buy powder by the box car worth (and some not available to you and me) their load may vary from lot to lot. Best to work up a load and attempt to reach the factory ammo velocity before reaching pressure limits.

I weighed 5 loaded rounds and took the average at 390grs. Then did the same for fired cases at 181.5grs. 390-181.5-bullet 168=40.5grs. for powder and primer charge. I chronoed this load @ 2659fps @ 59*F. This box averaged around .335" 5 shot groups @100yds.
I loaded the same brass with a 210 primer, 40.5grs H-4895 with the 168gr SMK and got 2689fps 10.74ES 4.12SD and .321" for 5 shots. Take away .10 gr for the priming compound leaves 40.4grs powder charge and the velocity should be close to factory.
Another good load that's close to the factory load is 42grs Re-15 @ 2651fps 19.17ES 6.70SD. I have shot a .254" group with this load under perfect conditions.
