favoured method for forming .284 from 6.5-284?

It would seem that the overwhelmingly perfered case for .284 Win or Shehane is necked up Lapua 6.5-284 brass. Assuming no turn neck, are folks simply running the 6.5 case neck over tapered expander button, or perhaps an 7mm expander mandrel? It's time for a Redding order, so I'd rather only make one order if I can.

I neck up my lapua brass using a tapered k & M 7mm expanpander mandrel. Take a look at the gun of the week 88, Mr. Ballard has some good info on what worked and didn't work well for him.

There's a very high risk of having the neck collapse inside the body if you attempt to neck up this case with its 35 degree shoulder. What I did was using a 6.5 Rem Mag sizer die from Lee in order to bump the shoulder down to an easier-to-work-with 25 degree angle. Afterwards, there will be no problem at all to neck it down or up.

2644ever,
That is very interesting, I haven't heard of anyone changing the shoulder angle prior to necking up the 6.5-284 brass. While I don't consider myself an expert I have necked up 400+ lapua cases without any problems. Just use a good tapered mandrel and some imperial die wax, and you can save yourself a lot of extra work and time.
Best regards,
Ben

I have expanded close to 800 Lapua 6.5x284 cases to 7mm at this point and only lost one when I tried to do it in one step with a tapered expanded button. All of the others were done in three progressive steps with Neil Jones expansion mandrels and Imperial sizing wax, the last step being the K&M expander mandrel for the neck turning tool. Probably over-kill on my part, but it has worked.

I have had no trouble just putting a little sizeing wax and running them through the 6.5X284 full lengh die. I have not spoiled a single case yet.
