I am going to replace a old deer feeder next week. I was fixing to get a tripod feeder to put up. But O got the opportunity to buy a used dead fall feeder trough feeder that raises and closes based on a timer. It holds 350 lbs corn. It looks like a log. My question is does everyone here thank that style is better more attractive to deer supposedly trains deer to eat only in daylight because you can program it so doors are closed at night. THOUGHTS PLEASE?

Follow up: we set the timers to throw 30 minutes after daylight in the morning and 30 minutes before dark and run them from July to January. Here in Arkansas if there's a big acorn crop no feed we've ever found will pull them off the oak trees but being foragers they will include them in their daily feeding routines. Main thing is all the does will use them and when the rut starts the bucks will come to them to chase the does.... John

Deer find plenty of natural food they don't need help.

If CWD is found near your area, you may want to think twice about enticing them into congregating in small areas. As far as I know CWD is here to stay and the only question is how fast it will spread. FWIW, deer survive eating natural food sources- even weeds have been found to offer adequate nutrition and in the winter they turn to eating browse which is seldom in short supply.

Title 14, section 251.3 of the California code of regulations state feeding deer in CA is illegal yet I know folks who do. Some of the other posters are correct in that corn is not the best for the deer's digestion.

Deer will eat what is planted no doubt. As do wild rabbits. They don't know its bad for them. Much like humans who consume junk food. Not the healthiest but it sure tastes good. I had a rabbit eat a jalapeno plant down to the roots. Cute little bunny. Sadly it was attacked and killed by a coyote. or we think the culprit was one at least.

This is what to think about. If you feed them, you could actually be killing them.

Another thing to keep in mind for those of you in states that actually have a winter.

Deer have different digestive needs through out different times of years. Feeding deer corn or apples in the winter can hurt more than help. The foods high in sugars cause havoc for them in these months.

So if you are going to feed deer, make sure you do not have any CWD in your state and do your homework. Alter your feed with the seasons. I personally understand the sentiment. I love helping the deer. But if you are going to help, make sure not to harm.

Everyone has a right to their opinion But, if corn was killing deer, then I doubt that there would be a single deer alive in Texas....
lol. can't speak for texas deer, only deer in CA. I know folks who use deer feed corn mixed with apples. While I do not think simply eating corn will kill them per se, my understanding raw corn isn't good for them just like marshmallows are not good for raccoons.

Wildlife researchers say corn is not good for deer. It's high in protein and messes up their digestion. Deer have been finding natural healthy food since the last ice age.

I guess you would not call field corn that the deer flock to and eat is not healthy, right ? Probably the researchers you mention would also agree. Sure makes me wonder why deer flock to and eat corn off the stalk and especially those that fall to the ground. Just saying.

I've shot many, many deer over corn and in corn fields - my goal was to attain food and eliminate a pest. A deer is a great pest because they can be delicious. And I never cared about the size of the rack.

I had a friend, who killed a state record deer and he hunted them, not over grain or food plots. He said they were actually easy to kill. So he would camouflage up and stalk through the woods with a video camera - he especially like going after rain. You wouldn't believe the trophies he had on film. His goal was entertainment.
