Favorite powder and primer for 10mm auto and horniest 185 grams XTP

I've been asked to load a couple hundred rounds for a friend and was wondering if a certain powder and primer usually worked well with this combination.

I think you meant grains also...otherwise that is one heavy 10mm bullet.:D

Blue dot works good in my 40, seems it would work good in the 10 also. I have it on hand and don't mind working up until it burns well though.

I'm sorry again just got this new phone and have not turned off corrective text and I think it is changing words for me. Thanks for the info. I also have a 40 cal that I reload for but 10mm cases are much longer than the 40 cal and I don't know how much that will effect it.

I use WAP because I have plenty. I also have Blue dot. Given the flat Don't use Blue dot in the .41 Remington Magnum warnings I wouldn't use Blue dot in the 10mm. YMMV
SAFETY NOTICE

At Alliant Powder, we take safety seriously. That’s why we periodically test our products in different situations to be sure our use recommendations stay current. Check here for any safety notes or recall information. Stay safe and keep accurate.

Alliant Powder periodically reviews and tests their published reloading data to verify that our recommended recipes have not changed over time.

During the latest review Alliant Powder discovered that Alliant Powder's Blue Dot® should not be used in the following applications:

  • Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile (Blue Dot® recipes with heavier bullet weights as specified in Alliant Powders Reloading Guide are acceptable for use).
  • Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 41 Magnum cartridge (all bullet weights).
Use of Blue Dot® in the above cases may cause a high pressure situation that could cause property damage and serious personal injury.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

I have been using Autocomp in the 10mm, 45acp, 9mm, and 380acp. I have a micrometer metering insert on the Hornady LNL AP press/measure. Makes dialing to the desired charge weight fast when changing calibers. I have been using CCI or Federal large pistol primers.

I've been using Blue Dot with 200gr cast bullets in my G20 - they shoot quite well. I tried HS6 and 2400 but the accuracy was not as good as the BD loads. I used these powders as I had them on my shelf. If buying a powder specifically for the 10mm, I would most likely try lil gun and AA #9.

The 10mm isn't listed in your safety notice.
For 357 the notice is for 125gr bullets.

Both cartridges listed use a roll crimp instead of the taper crimp.
Possibly something to do with it?

Power Pistol has worked fine for me...
They say it has a lot of Muzzle flash but I have not noticed but not shooting at night so maybe it does. Silhouette is also good choice and has flash retardant

Go to a web site called 10mm-firearms.com, there are several sections that deal with load data. There is a section the breaks down factory ammo with a list of components used.

Like others, blue dot under the 185 or 200 xtps. . I am interested in trying some VV N105 next batch I work up.

I certainly don't know. Just another consideration. There have been temperature issues with Blue Dot in shotguns as well. There are so many choices for so many powders and so many cartridges that I stay away from the slightest issue unless I don't. Then again I'm reluctant to load for others since I lack both a license and insurance. When I do I avoid as many potential issues as I can.

There's a classic saying that flying in the trees is a bad idea and so a general rule of don't go near the trees, in fact a higher rule is don't routinely go below ten thousand feet without good reason.

I don't take loads of BallC2 after ground squirrels on hundred+ degree days either.

I have used a case full of Blue Dot with a .380 bullet in a high pressure 9x19 load for ground squirrels at eyeball ranges with a flat shooting load. I've considered doing the same with a 9X23 and didn't, fearing a .357 Maximum throat blasting effect far more than an over pressure load.

I do know that WAP, either remaining stock or current incarnation from Western performs well with no known issues at all.

I have power pistol but don't recall seeing it in any load data I've looked at. As far as reloading for someone else we have discussed the possibilities and liabilities and being good friends I feel comfortable loading a few rounds for him. I certainly don't intend on flirting with pressure or temp sensitive powder. Accurate 9 looks good in Hornadys data.

The 10mm with mid heavies (180-200) runs great with blue dot, AA9 or HS7 for me. IMR 800X is the fastest but is horrible at metering. WWLR primers or CCI300s are my favorites. CCI being #1. Magnums aren't necessary.

I just loaded some 150's and 180s with BE-86
Plan to shoot them this weekend will let you know how it goes.

I'd guess it's the largish case capacity and (comparatively) small charges. Just a guess though. The inclusion of a single bullet weight in 357 kind of throws a wrench in that supposition, though, unless it's due to the light, short bullet.
