Favorite long range 270 hunting loads.

If you talk to the famous writer Jack O'conner (Deceased) There in his opinion was no other caliber but the 270. A 270 can reach out as far as the shooter is capable of. If you are referring to the 270 WSM you can reach some what further than the 270 Winchester. In capable hands it is a fine Deer caliber. As far as recommending loads, I think looking at the reloading manuals are your best bet. I really don't like giving out a load for a specific caliber cause the rifle you are using it in may be the best rifle made but could also be an accident waiting to happen, that's just my opinion. Others may see different. With any load start low and work up. I like the lyman book they give accuracy loads as well as factory duplication loads. Good Luck. Lou

The NRA did quite extensive testing on loads for the 270 Winchester in November of 1981 using 5 different rifles and testing over 2500 loads. The most accurate load was 57.0 grains of IMR 4831 with a Winchester 120 large rifle primer,130gr Sierra flat base bullet Remington case with a overall lenght 3.330. You may not be able to find any of the old Winchester 120 primers. I have done a lot of testing and have not be able to improve on this load. I have been using a Federal 210 Match primer. TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT!!!!!

The H4831 works almost as well at 58.0 grains everything else the same. but not as good IMR4831 Just like the NRA testing said.

Sorry to not be clear, what do you think it is about the IMR that causes it to perform better than the H4831, not questioning whether it does.

The IMR 4831 is a faster burning powder and changes pressure in both barrel and chamber. This is also true of the Remington brass vs. Winchester brass the comberation seems to be what that caliber likes. Most every change you make on any of the compoents will make some sort varation in either pressure and or accuracy. Finding the right comberation is what takes time. It would be nice if the NRA would do test like they did for the 270 Winchester for all the calibers. It would save us reloaders a lot of time and money.

My Lilja barrel 270 likes H-4350 with 140gr TSX with 150gr Partition likes H-4831sc I also have a Hart barrel 270 and likes the same loads. I think powder, bullet, barrel have improve since the NRA test back in 1981.
