Faster powder in the 22-250 AI

Was at my local club range today with the 22-250 AI along with seven or so other people. Shooting H4831 SC with the Hornady 88's which shot great at 38 grains. What I'm wondering about is another option in the faster burn rate, faster than 4350 or R-19 etc. More along the Varget ,4064 speed. Anybody have speed and accuracy with something faster than the typical preferred med slow stuff ?
Thanks

I can't speak for your Ackley, but I've been having fantastic luck with RE17 at moderate loads for a 220 swift. It seems very forgiving in terms of accuracy and pressure. May want to give it a try.

I'm also with Bill K on CFE 223.

Good luck!

A friend of mine regularly uses IMR4895 in his. He's using surplus SS109s with 4895 for case forming, it shoots around 1/4" groups with this combo. He's also using it to shoot Sierra 80 grain MKs with similar or better results.

I've used IMR4166 in place of Varget in a 6.5x47L and a 6x47L. It's several places faster than Varget on the burn rate charts though. Probably not ideal but worked well and was available.

Using RL15 to fire form with 69 smk's and RL23 with 75gr ELDs. I will stay at 3375ish for now, it shoots amazing. Wouldn't want to change a thing. The RL15 gets me less than 2" fireforming at 300 yards. Very fun to play with.

Steve -

Howdy !

How long is your rifle’s barrel ?

My 28” .224” cal 1-8 K&P barrel was chambered in my .22-35 Remington wildcat. Case capacity is between that of stock .22-250 and a .22-250AI.

I was very happy w/ AA3100 under Hornady 75”A-Max”. My favorite
Varmint/target load was 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Match. The combo gave me 3,420fps, and switch to use of FED LR Magnum Rifle Match yielded 3,500fps; w/ slight opening of groups. Faster loads wee possible, but the above load gave me great accuracy and useful energy.

IMHO - if your barrel is longer than 26”, you would be best served by powders w/ burn rates slower than W760/H414. Temp stable powders like the new StaBal 6.5 and IMR4955 are in that category.

VV160, while not reknowned to be temp stable; also is within the burn rate range I suggest.

Hope this helps.
