Fast (1-8) twist 220 Swift - old, standard, but completely awesome!!

I got to test my 220 Swift over the last two weeks and wanted to pass on the information. Rifle is a Stiller Tac 300 action, Jewell trigger, Rock Creek 28" barrel with 1/8 twist, Hart long range tactical laminated stock bedded in Devcon, with a Nightforce BR 8-32x56mm scope. I am using the 80gr Nosler Custom Competitions and CCI BR-2 primers.

*****These loads may not be safe in your gun it is for my exact specifications on chamber, COL, exact bullet, etc...!! Start low and slowly work you way up. I actually started at 36 grs and worked my way up slowly*****

AA3100 powder at the following charges:
38.5gr- 3100 fps
39.5gr - 3218 fps
40.5gr - 3340 fps
41.5gr - 3479 fps ***most accurate load and a deviation of 6 fps***
42.0gr - 3495 fps

Let me tell you the Stiller Tac 300 & 28" Rock Creek is shooting too!! Worst load shot about .75 MOA and best shot .18 MOA. I shot the best group I ever shot at 300 yards measuring .57"

Thanks again to 40x for the starting load information it was very helpful!!

Any anyone else shooting fast twist Swifts? What kind of loads are you using?

Howdy !

Apples and... near-apples.....

I shot my wildcat .35Rem necked-down to .224" caliber, in both a 24" 1-14; and 28" 1-8.

In its 28" 1-8 guise, my best load was 75gr "A"-Max over 40.5gr AA3100 and Fed LR Match; for a 3,420fps accuracy load.

Switch of primer to FED LR Magnum Match gave 3,500fps honest, albeit w/ a little widening of the groups.

Yeh... that 3100 stuff works !

With regards,

Thanks 357Mag! Your post last year is what made me decide to try AA3100. You were spot on, it shot everything well. I also noticed there wasn't much deviation in speed from shot to shot across all loads.

Love the Swift, standard dies, no fire forming, incredible performance, and not to picky on load!!

Congrats on your build! It sounds like a very cool setup! The ol' Swift seems to be an almost forgotten round these days. I am a 22-250 shooter myself, but I have read where the old timers say that the Swift is more accurate, on average, than the 22-250.

I think it is awesome that you built a custom rifle around the Swift chambering and the fast twist adds that much more of the "cool factor" to my way of thinking. I would love to see some pics of the rifle and targets if you feel like posting them.

I just recently re-barreled my 22-250 with a 12 twist and like how it is shooting, but my next barrel will be an AI with an 8 twist.

Not a Swift but I'm shooting a couple of 8 twist 22-250AI's with 75gr Amax and H4831sc, getting 3300 fps but have had it up to 3400 with 4350, might have to try that AA3100

I am vary happy with my swift with 69 and 70 grn pills. I havent had the chance to try the 80s yet hope to this fall.
I am yousing aa2700 now and it is spot on out of a rem 700 and 8 twist.
Rock chucks hate it!
