While Farley has been out of business for quite some time. I have pick up their rest, making high quality parts as a replacement option. Farley sold a lot of rests that should have never left building. I posted previously about servicing their rest as well as the other brands.
Wanted to give shooter an option to make these rest fuction better then new. Here are some pictures of the "Bag Plate". It has the two holes that the bag holder attatch to. This plate under spring pressure developes friction in the rest. There are two critical surfaces, one the inside of the body. The second being the bag plate. I wented to give shooters an idea of what happens inside their rests.
From looking at shiny areas on the plate, you can see how little surface was used to create friction. Seen like problems from other manufactures. It easy to machine aluminum at high feed rates. The aluminum is like rubber under cutte pressure. That why you end up with such an uneven surface. As that cutter dulls the problem becomes worse. My approach is a bit different. Once the plate is .006" over sized I let it sit. Then I go back a surface grind the 6061-T6 to final size. Making sure there is no surface tension. From the start stock removed has been kept even on both sides of the plate. When the plate is finish it will measure within .0005" to .00005" of being flat. It a slow process, if you even taken .003" off even with coolant on a surface grinder in small steps to prevent in from warping. It

Hope this information helps shooters understand their rest better. Shooter will go through all kinds of efforts and expenses to improve their group sizes. Yet completely overlook their rest.
