I think he was very lucky and I don't think safety glasses would've made any difference. It wasn't his day to leave this earth, fortunately. I'm pretty sure they will be very happy to make things right and count their blessings too, that you are ok. I don't hold anything against them and won't say more here. I may stay in bed next year on April 17.
