Family practice with the hunting rifles!

My youngest son and I grabbed some breakfast and headed to the range, with the intent of shooting the 300 yard gong a few times, then getting the heck out of there before it got too hot. Here's a few photos:

He started with his 6mm Remington, with a good 3,000 fps hunting load, slamming little 100 gr Nosler Partitions into the gong. It's got a nice 3.5-10x Leupold, and gets used for varmints, coyotes and deer. Rifle was new in 1974.

Moved up to the ancient M-1917 .30-06, and scored a first round hit at 300, with a 165 Nosler at 2750 fps. We like the ol' warhorse. It sits in a B&C stock, crisp Timney trigger, free floated barrel, and has a 6x Leupold with a dot & tapered crosshairs:

The gong is off to the left of the bare looking area.

And of course, I cheated big time, and used the .308 Green Machine, prone, sitting and standing.

Good breakfast, good shooting. I think the young man might use the .30-06 for bear in a month. He's shooting it better this year.

Thanks for the report! it is good to know that you are teaching the right kind of gun control. Nice looking rifles!

BTW, it all looks bare to me.

Glad to see you out enjoying the sport with your son. Those are also some very nice rifles. That 6mm sure is looking good for 36 years old!

I hope your son has luck with the old -06 on his bear hunt. Very capable round in a stone reliable old rifle. Nothing wrong with old war steel taking game into the 21st century with the good old -06. It's just as capable now as it was 100 years ago. That says a lot in the age of monster magnums that disappear in half the time they took to design. In 104 years there has yet to be another round developed that is truly better and more versatile. John Browning was far ahead of his time, and the 30-06 is still proving that every day.

It's great you are keeping the sport alive by hunting and shooting with your son. It's something every father should do.
