Factory varmint rifle accuracy at 1000 Yards?

Most shooters have started out with factory varmint or standard rifles before moving up to custom outfits.

It would be interesting to see how these rifles would group at 1000 yards on a calm day. Either varmint or standard weight barrels.

I am particularly interested in the .243 Winchester and 85 gr. hollowpoint boat bullets.

Using a target scope with enough elevation would be best but a consistant hold over aiming point on a target would work too.

Please post you most consistant groups. Thanks.

I tried firing my factory configured 700 VLS in 6mm Rem with handloaded 55 grain VMaxes at 1K, but the POI was so far below anticipated POI that the group was pretty much meaningless. I recalculated my comeups and pulled the target in to 800 yards. I wound up with 4 shots into 6.5", with a flyer opening the group to 11", with the group center still about 13" below calculated POI. There was a slight right to left wind blowing, but it wasn't too bad. I've not tried 1K since.

Since then, I've rebarreled the rifle with a Krieger, and had all the other little "tweaks" done to it. I've also come up with a 75 grain VMax load at close to 3700 fps that has proven consistenly deadly on pdogs out to 700 yards. I'll eventually get around to trying this one at 1K, hopefully with better results than I had last time.

One lesson I learned attempting the 1K shot is that if there is any, even very slight, error in close range zero,read...100 yards), that error is enormously magnified at 1K. My 100 yard "zero" was off by about 1/8", which I didn't think would have a really big influence at 1K. Boy.....was I mistaken. I would have had just as good,or bad) a result if I'd been trying to miss the target.

I have a Savage M12 BVSS in 243win that has shot a 9" and 11" ten shot group at 1000 with 105gr A-max's.Was the only 2 times I shot it at that yardage

Anybody close to Iowa can come on down & shoot in our 1000yd stock gun class. When I started @ Iowa, I figured if I'm going to travel that far, I might as well shoot it all. So, light gun, heavy gun, & stock it is. Started out in stock w/ Rem. Sendero in 300 Ultra Mag. 99 grs. Retumbo w/ 190 Sierra MK @ just under 3300. When I shot, me & the 6 guys on either side of me knew it too!,Vias brake) Set the range record w/ 5.4" group. Now the record is a 2.8" set w/ PSS 7 mag. That's setting the bar a bit high. My 300 died @ under 400 rds. Presently shooting a Sendero in 25-06 w/ 115 Bergers. Smallest group so far is a 5.6" Don't get caught up in small bullets/ go faster fan club. Bigger bullets w/ better B.C.'s rule @ longer ranges. For the factory 243/6mm's w/9-10 twist, try Berger's 95gr.vld or the like. Our factory guns in Iowa include 7-08, 7saum, 7mag, 308, 30-06, 300wsm, all w/ bigger bullets. Don't discount a factory gun as my 2 smallest groups ever have been shot w/ one. Pretty sad against Bat's & Night Forces! Come on down & give it a "shot". Al.

My 1K "test" was informal, being conducted along the edge of a pdog town I shoot. The main thing I learned that day about 1K shooting is that it's a lot of work...:,
