Factory Class Choice

My local gun club has a shoot and I want to clean one guys clock. Here's the work order. I know he has his barrel turned and rechambered on a 40x. He's won this match every month for several years.

Factory Class: fires two,5-bull) targets at 100 yards for a perfect score of 100 10X. Rifle must be any factory made production rifle with any power scope. No alterations except glass bedding, free floating of barrel and trigger adjustment. Factory rifles of any caliber will compete in the same class.

There's a few ideas I have first the 40-XBBR in 6br then the Cooper Montana Varminter 6br this is a 100 yard match. I also did a little research Savage.

Don't forget Savage is offering the target rifle in the 6br also. Just a little food for thought. I would prefer the Savage to the Remington, I don't have ant experience with the Cooper so I can't comment on them but the Savage has earned my respect. Tim.

If you are going to take on a cheater you have to level the playing field OR protest his gun.

I despise cheaters.

I agree, It would be really hard to use a factory rifle and compete with a customized. If I had to use a factory gun to beat a cheater but I didnt want to lower myself to his level. I would buy a Savage and then screw on new or take off factory barrels until I found a hummer. Thats the beauty of a Savage action, all you need is a fired piece of brass from the original or just get a set of GO/No GO guages.

I have no desire to drop to his level. But the Savage might be the way to go to keep it street legal. I found this out by plain old dumb luck.
I was on a business trip and by chance I stopped in gunshop who works on high end BR guns. There was a name tag on one and from there I conducted my own CSI "I kept the lights on". But after I purchased a Rifle the cream just came to the top over flowing.

This guy has been involved in BR shooting many years and is looked up to. Hell he claims he'd been doing all his own work for years. I come to find out he has subbed it all out over the last 20 years. I have had work done by this Polecat. In his shop he has a milling machine and lathe. Turns out he never uses them. The joke was he doesn't even know how to turn them on.

So that is why I am wanting to clean his clock.I peronally don't think the club would go deep into a protest.

Is this the one.
Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter OR
Model 12 Varminter Low Profile Single Shot

Which one has the wider flatter forend??

The best Savage factory stock going right now is the Long Range Bench Rest model on the 12 F class.
This model is now available in the 6BR 8 twist.
I would start there. Not a cheap Savage$$$ but its a great platform for a factory rifle and bench shooting.
Whether the factory tube/chamber is up to the task is another question.

It is possible to out shoot a custom with a factory gun though.
My Savage 12 VLP in 204R once outscored all the custom 6BR's at a 300yd egg shoot. Them boys were not happy.
I don't expect to do it often or maybe never again.

I'm a big fan of the 204. Totally the wrong bullet for score shooting but if I had to do it today with a factory tube I'd grab my 204.
A fresh 204 factory barrel maintaining a consistent fouling condition is capable of punching groups most folks would not believe.
I just screwed on my 5th Savage 204 factory tube. Using various factory ammo to run it in the Federal 39bk stuff grouped five in .340 at 100yds. Not bad for factory ammo, I was quite pleased.

Bergers have always been the best in my hand loads but I'll give the 39bk a chance.

I like the Savage, have one, a 10 FP in .223, throws 68's all day long into a .250-.300 hole if I can do my part @ 100. Used it last year to shoot a clean in Keene, NH 300 yd. F-Class F/TR last year with a 800-61X and finished 4th! They didn't have a factory class.
What size is the bull on this 100 yd. target?

We had the same thing going on at our club. Same guy winning every month. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Remington heavy barrel 7mm-08. Last month I shoot a perfect 100 but no X's. It was enough to win that class.
Getting the right rifle in my opinion is only half the battle. The next is loading up very good ammunition. Whatever caliber you chose I would seriously make that decision based on whether you can get Lapua or Norma brass and good match bullets. Then I would look into a good set of dies. I'm a huge Wilson fan but I'm sure there are other very good dies. A

I was told by a gunsmith that the Savage Target Action would not make a good 100/200 yard Benchrest rifle. It would not be as good as a Custom Action.

I do not understand, because the barrel and chamber there in are the most important part.

Why would the action be a problem?

A Savage action can be the heart of a suprisingly good rifle. But in 100/200 yard benchrest it's all about shooting the 6PPC cartridge at high pressures. Weight is also an issue. Basically you need a light-weight action with very good tolerances, one that lends itself to glue-in installations, the Savage does not because of the side-hanging sear system), a system that can take very high pressures,Savage is strong enough, but you'll need to bush the firing pin), and one that can take a 1-4 oz. trigger, nothing available for the Savage that goes this low reliably).

Pressure capability, glue-in compatibility, trigger options, and general tolerances -- these are reasons why the Savages haven't been popular in short-range benchrest. That said, you could probably build a darn fine rifle with a Savage, but a dedicated BR custom action might give you an edge. And little increases in accuracy are a big deal in short-range Benchrest.
