Factory 700 Rechamber-6mm rem to 6BR

A buddy of mine traded a Savage model 12 in .223 for a Remington 700 in 6mm Remington. He had no practical purpose for this rifle and talked about using it as the base for a build.

After much deliberation he decided to have it rechambered to 6BR since he was only going to lose about 1 inch worth of barrel. He loaded two dummy rounds with 90gr Bergers and sent it to the Smith.

The smith ended up saying that the factory barrel is horribly copper fouled and that the bore was not center to the barrel....but that is somewhat common in factory barrels.

My buddy seems to think that this will be a sleeper rifle and plans to use it at our club level benchrest match in factory class. I don't know if the rules wil allow this rifle to be used as 'Factory' but it does have all original parts.

Any thoughts or predicted expectations. The barrel is a 1:9 twist and now measures 23 inches.

Rechambering will usually knock you out of factory class.
My thought? Should have kept the Savage.

ya it seems like hes going the long way around to get a rifle that probably wont shoot as good as the savage.

I did this with a sporter Tikka 595 in .243
Got it cut and shut to 6 BR no turn neck

Shoots half moa with 3 shots using 65 V-max and RL-10X at 100

This was built as a light hunting/stalking rifle so I have only based accuracy on 3 shot groups as it's a light sporter barrel

But mine works exactly for it's intended purpose

I have shot it sub moa at 400 yards at the range

I asked my smith if this job was possible- and he looked at the barrel and action and said- why not- did some measurements on the barrel and said- it had plenty of life left in it- not a BR quality barrel but would do fine for hunting

And he was right

65 V-max makes very satisfying Paddock Pizza or feral pests and birds
